I have Tropico 3. I always play as a Communist dictator or a democratically elected, yet corrupt, socialist president. Free healthcare and housing for everyone!

is it worth a preorder?

well game spot gave it a 7.5 compared to Tropico 3's 8.0, and when combined with the expansion Absolute Power Tropico 3 is worth way more then an 8.0.

I'd have to say maybe. Depends on if you like that sort of game. they gave it a 7.5 for being too similar to 3, but wasn't 3 too similar to 1?

same graphics too, not that I care-I love to play the original.

3 was a lot like 1 in some ways other than graphical improvements and the addition of more buildings. To be honest I would like to see Tropico add some political depth because at this point it is still pretty similar to the original Tropico and this is coming someone who owns everything but Tropico 4. I can't see myself purchasing Tropico 4 at this point as I am getting rather bored with it at this point.

I play it every once and awhile. Good game. They did add some cool features for that Capitalist inside of us in absolute power such as Privatization of industry.

Plus the game is heavy with [stereotypical] Communist and Capitalist politicking. But that just makes it more fun. I always piss off the big bad U.S.A by resorting to farming and selling guns to the USSR and praising the Russians. :D

Tropico 4 is available for download for PC from your neighborhood friendly robin hoods. It doesn't come out on consoles for another 3 weeks T.T

I believe you now get to appoint government ministers, and you are able to deal with nations other than the US and the USSR; China, EU, The "middleast" (essentially the Arab league and OPEC).

I agree that it would be nice to be able to get beyond to basic state capitalist set up.

If that is true that somewhat piques my interest. I guess I have just been wishing for a modern version of Hidden Agenda which was rather excellent for the time it was released.

I think what tropico needs to improve are the capitalist/communist aspects of the game. Tropico 3 made it very simplistic ( and if you ask me a little one sided favoring capitalism ) in the sense that capitalists were about money, and communists were about housing/healthcare. I'd appreciate a little more depth to the struggle than this over simplification.

And by one sided I meant that it is WAY easier being capitalist in this game than communist, since EVERYTHING is run by money. Communism has nothing really to compete with this in game, so maybe sprucing up the edicts would help (ie. if happiness is 'X' then you motivate your workers to work for the motherland or w/e... 1/4 price buildings, increase in productivity... etc... )

The Political element is pretty shallow. Yeah, you can build a Ministry and appoint your Government (you can't enact the majority of Edicts without Ministers) but the choices for government are limited. It's either Democratic (which increases Workers skill gain), Communist (which 'forces' people to vote for El Presidente) and Junta (which does the best it can to stop people from becoming Rebels)...

Tropico 4 is too much the same as Tropico 3. Although it's fun to play when you haven't played Tropico 3 in a while, it gets old much quicker. It'll be more fun for people who have never played Tropico before.

easier to play Capitalist? when I played as a Commie dictator once I was raking in 30-40,000 dollars a month, plus every single citizen had housing and free healthcare!

It's pretty easy to get 150,000 per ship docking in income, but as things progress it's hard to provide enough employment for all the citizen and traffic congestion gets horrid really easy.

I want some railways. ;c

Only played the first one. I just used to print money all the time and imprison electoral rivals. Will definitely get this one.

It's essentially an update to Tropico 3, not too much new. If you don't already have 3, I suggest picking it up though.

I find the longer a game goes on the more the economy tends to stagnate as you use up your finite resources and thus have to diversify the economy into various types of farming and factory manufacturing relating to said farming. I also have a hard time keeping up with immigration and housing as I tend to focus on making sure everyone is employed...while forgetting they are currently living in shacks.

trying to be a good communist is boring after a loooong while.

so.

there was a time when i tried my best to plunge the island into civil war. i would arrest and assassinate a shit ton of people to make people hate the government. the only thing i would focus on is military and police. lol. the rebellions are never fun though. its just... meh.

I was rather hyped for this game, sad to see that not a lot has changed from the third game. I guess I'll wait until it gets a bit older and pick it up cheep when I can.

Any tips on building a stable communist country? I only know how to do it when I'm a capitalist.

Build lots of agriculture and heavy industry if possible (Well not "heavy industry" as that doesn't exist too much in the game at low cost)

Rusty Shackleford

agriculture and housing. unfortunately, if you want to build nice stuff and have better hospitals, you are going to have to focus more on export goods.

I think Tropico 3 was very difficult. Am I noob?

Looks like the game was made with the objective of everything going wrong, one way or another! Something like... "The proof communism is inferior."

no, everything goes wrong no matter what system.

you just have to learn the mechanics. how to start off your economy, how to build it, and how to manage politics. once you give it a few shots it isnt hard.
