I want to get a better sense of what happened in 1848-9. What works are regarded as "classic"? What did you find the most accessible?

Here's an online overview. It's hardly in-depth, but should give you a general idea what happened: http://www.age-of-the-sage.org/history/1848/revolution_of_1848.html

Another one, it points out that England and Russia remained unaffected by the revolutions: http://mars.wnec.edu/~grempel/courses/wc2/lectures/rev1848.html

Whole bunch of articles, about specific movements and/or people of the time: http://www.ohio.edu/chastain/contents.htm

Eric Hobsbawm wrote some great stuff on that period, I hear. If you can your hands on The Age of Revolutions and The Age of Capital, that'll give you a superb understanding of the factors that led to 1848 and its consequences.
