View Full Version : What to name a baby Rottweiler
Le Libérer

15 years ago my partner's male and female Rottweiler gave birth to a litter of 12 pups. I was there for the birth, and picked out the female pup that reminded me the most of his favorite dog, the father, Marley.
While her siblings were out playing and fighting in the warm sun, my baby was belly up in the leaves under the shade of a tree. I knew by her temperment, she was the one for me.
Over the years, while he was traveling to Indonesia or easter Europe, I would have both Rotts, Marley and Bella in a one room efficiency apartment. They would both take their places on my sofa. I called them the wall of Rott.
Anyway, like I said that was years ago. Bella became sick with bone cancer last years ago and passed away June2010. She was the only animal I had owned in my adulthood. It was /is very painful realilzing she is gone.

I still have reservations about getting another dog at this point. Even though her death was 15 months ago, its still very painful not to have her with me.
I called her Bella, but her real name was Beltane. I had asked another online community to help with names. Beltane was my favorite from all the suggestions, In Celtic traditions, it is known as Beltane or Bealten, the magic of flowers, which represented the newness of life. It was perfect for her.
Now I am asking this online community to help me with names. Only this time, I would like one that can be appropriate for either gender, though I will probably pick another female Rott and something that pertains to Communism, radicalism, or revolution.
Any ideas?

How about Belka or Strelka, after the first Soviet dogs to return from space alive?

Nah, but you seem to come across as a feminist of sorts, so how about Lucy, after Lucía Sánchez Saornil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luc%C3%ADa_S%C3%A1nchez_Saornil), one of the founders of the anarcha-feminist organisation Mujeres Libres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mujeres_Libres) which existed during the Spanish Civil War.

A mate of mine called his Rottweiler Tony.
I'm not not saying you should call your dog that, but the looks you get when you call it really are worth while.

I made a search and it looks like Devrim is both male and female

I felt very bad when my dog died. I still dream about her. I like Belka or Strelka myself.Devrim is a nice name too.
I have thought "Ratzinger" might be a good name for a Rotweiler. That's the surname of the current Pope. Before he was "elevated" to the papacy the ultra-reactionary Cardinal Ratzinger was called "the Pope's Rotweiler" so why not continue to honor him this way? You might piss off Catholics though.

I dunno. Call me a history/mythology nerd or whatever, but I'd have to go with Bellona. Rotties were originally bred by the Romans as dogs of war (despite the Germanic sounding name), and Bellona was the Roman goddess of war which IIRC predated Mars. Unless of course that all sounds too aggressive for you, lol.

Piss off Catholics? I already do that. But I do like the name for a male Rottie.

I like Aaden....though it has nothing to do with communism if you disregard Yemen (Aden).
You could go for Victoire.
That has everything to do with comunism and socialism. Victoire Leodile Bera was a French feminist and communist who played a major role and a fighting one at that in the Paris Commune...and who worte extensively on feminism and socialism.
The name is applicable to both men and women. Its French...which is a nice touch And it has direct ties with not only socialism but also feminism.

You could name her Lydumila after Lyudmila Pavilchenko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko), otherwise known as one of the bad ass Nazi killers in history. Plus, according to the one woman I know with the name Lyudmila, Luda is a common nickname, which I'd imagine would be incredibly easier to yell if you one day come home to find the mangled remains of your favorite couch cushion strewn across the floor.
Of course if you get a male dog and want to keep with the awesome Nazi killing Russians theme, you have tons of possible picks. Probably most famously Vasily Zaytsev, another Soviet sniper with an impressive body count to his name. That and, when combined with my mental picture of a pissed off rottweiler, a dog named Vasily would be one of the most incredibly bad ass dogs ever. imo
o well this is ok I guess

on an unrelated note:

bad-ass nazi killer? my grandfather was forcefully conscripted into the Wehrmacht when he was 17. He fought at the eastern front, but he never fought for Hitler. Had he refused to go to the army, he would have been shot. Simple as that.
Now tell me, is it "okay" to shoot a scared teenager who was forced into the army and label him as "another Nazi kill"?
There's a difference between killing ordinary soldiers and high-ranking (SS/Polit)-Officers. Remember, the soldiers were largely made out of proletarians, who, as we know, were and are used as pawns by their respective regimes.
This indiscriminate labeling of Germans during the Hitler regime as Nazis pisses me off. A minority were fervent Nazis. Just as I believe, a minority of the people in USSR were fervent Stalinists or M-L's.

Dogs mimic the behavior of their owners.
So... how about "60 year old politically inept bully whose main goal is to dominate a forum of teenage boys"
or is that too long
._.
I'm not gonna get all official on you this time because you're so brand spankin' new, but just know that these sorts of personal attacks aren't acceptable here. It is at this point that I would encourage you review the FAQ. If you have any further questions, please feel free to PM myself or any other member of the mod/admin team for clarifications.
