I keep a journal of quotes that people have said and I appreciate.

And I tear out the pages that, after years of reflection, have really impacted my life. Those I frame.

I have many quotes framed, here are a few that guided my life/views:

"Live a good life because, I promise you, if any of those who died today could trade your place, they would change the world."
- My mother

"Yes, you're a Muslim. But don't be JUST a Muslim. Be a person who is Muslim. Be everything you want to be, and Muslim. Your faith should not be all others see when they look at you. You must be successful in your chosen career, a good wife, maybe someday a good mother, and a great neighbor and friend. And, after all that, a Muslim. If your identify is one thing, you become a caricature. You'd be the Muslim equivalent of a gay pride float."
- My Imam

"You must respect your husband. If you don't, get a new one."
- My grandmother.

"Love? Only the young are stupid enough to dream of marrying for love. Marriage and love are not often compatible. If you insist on having this, then you must be able to survive without your husband but want him around. Dependency breeds resentment."
- My grandmother.

TV: "The fish is surrounded..."
My sister: "The fishes surrounded? ****ing Americans, don't even know their own English."

"Nothing is worth more than this day."
- I read it somewhere.

"Just because it does'nt bother you does'nt mean it does'nt bother other people." - The Same chick

Marcus Valerius Martialis
Epigrams Liber X:47

These, my dearest Martialis, are
the things that bring a happy life:
wealth left to you, not laboured for;
rich land, an ever-glowing hearth;
no law, light business, and a quiet mind;
a healthy body, gentlemanly powers;
a wise simplicity, friends not unlike;
good company, a table without art;
nights carefree, yet no drunkenness;
a bed that’s modest, true, and yet not cold;
sleep that makes the hours of darkness brief:
the need to be yourself, and nothing more;
not fearing your last day, not wishing it.

Marcus Tullius Cicero
De Divinatione (Liber II:LVIII: 119)

Sed nescio quo modo nihil tam absurde dici potest quod non dicatur ab aliquo philosophorum

This was a framed, hand stiched quote on my bedroom wall as a child, made by some deceased relative I never knew. I first read this when I first learned how to read. Later I found out it was from Calvin Coolidge, a bourgeois pig, but I'll take it to the grave anyway:

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave."

My philosophy is basically this, and this is something that I live by, and I always have, and I always will: Don't, ever, for any reason, do anything, to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who or who you are with, or, or where you are going, or, or where you've been. Ever, for any reason, whatsoever.

Fantastic, thank you for sharing! I especially loved Apoi's.

A few more... only one that I actually printed, ha!

"Don't drown yourself in pity. It doesn't matter how horrible your experiences, there are always people in this world who will look at you and think: if only I had that life, I could be happy. Always."

"A scarf, a vest, a jacket, a sweater... it's not that cold. You shouldn't wear so many layers. You look like an onion."

"Don't get too comfortable with youthful beauty. You're Slavic. God may have blessed us more than the rest, but he takes our blessings away fastest. If you're not careful, when your Germanic friends are getting their first wrinkle, you'll already look like your grandmother. Start moisturizing with olive oil now."

The only advice I ever really get these days is "Fuck it", or "Be more spontaneous."
Neither of my parents give me advice, and the only shit my friends say is "Ask her out, idiot!"

But of course, I always get the best advice from strangers:

"Remember not our faulty pieces,
Remember not our rusted parts,
It’s not the petty imperfections that define us but
The way we hold our hearts,
And the way we hold our heads..."

O ME! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; Of the endless trains of the faithless—of cities fill’d with the foolish; Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) Of eyes that vainly crave the light—of the objects mean—of the struggle ever renew’d; Of the poor results of all—of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me; Of the empty and useless years of the rest—with the rest me intertwined; The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here—that life exists, and identity; That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.
Whitman

Sunt lacrimae rērum et mentem mortālia tangunt.

I was talking about this yesterday evening with one of my, by then drunk friends....

His words:

"Advice is like opinions. Everybody has one. And...and...there was something else...o..yes...and everybody is an asshole or something like that. Unless somebody buys me beer. So...you need to ask yourself: do you want to be an asshole?"

I think that about sums it up ;-)

technically I didn't "receive" this so I didn't post before but...

"Let a man never stir on his road a step
with out his weapon of war;
for unsure is the knowing when need shall rise
of a spear on the way out."
-Havamal, sage advice to guests and men, verse 38

also:

"Let no man glory in the greatness of his mind,
but rather keep watch o'er his wits.
Cautious and silent let him enter a dwelling;
to the heedful comes seldom harm,
for none can find a more faithful friend
than the wealth of mother wit."
-same as above, verse 6

True, but anyone could sustain a "do what you want" lifestyle for the short time. It takes considerable planning to do it for the long haul.
