View Full Version : Human race will 'split into two different species'

19th-century author H.G. Wells had predicted that humans will evolve into two distinctively seperate species:
(A) where intellect is ignored, or even looked down upon, and (B) where the absence of intellect thrives, multiplies and propagates...

A pertinent question: are we on the verge of that now, with this so-called "Tea party," religion, etc, shunning science and common sense?
Are some people actually starting to become stupid?

I think we are, theres a serious problem with this wave of "ignorance pride". On the same note i saw a bit on the news about how women dumb themselves down in order to pick up men.

I think it will more likely be:

a) Thriving ignorance, and rationalization is viewed as evil, and never changes it's beliefs
(tea party)
b) Equally stubborn, slightly less ignorant, changes it's beliefs pretty constantly.
('rational people')

I mean, most if not all of the 'scientific atheists' that I know are just as ignorant as the creationists. I hope a 3rd party that has an open mind comes along some time...

It's true. The human race divided into
1. Those farsighted folks who read Wells in the 19th century
and
2. Those lazy souls who waited for him to write his books.

human speciation will not happen unless we are somehow divided by planets. and even then, thousands or hundreds of thousands of years would have to pass with no mating taking place between the two populations.

I couldn't disagree with this any more. This assumption is completely unscientific and stupid.

This sort of price gouging in the world of academia seems to indicate we are/should be getting stupider and stupider as knowledge itself is more and more monopolized by big capital.

Count me as a Morlock any day, Eat the Rich!

Good book but seriously you couldn't pay me enough to read a Mail article on 'science'.

Wells didn't think what he had described in the Time Machine would actually happen, it was part of his long running feud with parts of Marxism, in particular class struggle. Basically he thought he would take its "crude" reasoning to the extreme by applying evolution to it and creating human society where you had essentially a clear cut division of 'two' groups, the Eloi (bourgeoisie) and the Morlocks (proletariat). Morlocks are basically toiling and working for the benefit of the Eloi, who do not work and rely on the Morlocks' productivity for their goods. It is implied that the Morlocks eventually 'overcome' the Eloi and become the dominant species as the Time Traveler sees a barren future (there was even a deleted chapter covering this).

So I don't think Wells intended people to take that as a "serious" claim but just as a part of his story telling, but within it, can be interpreted as a slam at the Marxists he scuffled with, similar to Orwell and his bad blood with Stalin and the Soviets.

OK comrades, so I was joking a bit in my hypothesis.

But then, who really knows what the future holds?

I wouldn't take the Daily Mail very seriously. If it said it was Thursday today I'd want verification.

I don't know if you comrades over in U.K. realize just how bad U.S. politics are getting over here.

Some of these elected politicians are unbelievably crazy! Who votes for these neanderthals? (not joking this time) :crying:

idk take with 10 kegs of salt any "evolutionary" theorist that talks about how human beings will be in 10k years. its a way to gain attention from third hand rags like the daily mall. a lot of this type of futuristic "evolutionary theorists" are just one step above "sociobiologists".

These aren't really new species, rather society splitting itself into two completely different societies.

Other than that, a fairly terrible article.

How stupid?

IQ is constantly on the rise and has to be set back to 100 as default every so many years. We are the smartest we've ever been.

Do you really think that people today are more stupid than 300 years ago when people thought black people were, more or less, a "missing link" between chimps and white people? Or even in the 1930s when "we" followed Hitler?!

I dont think anyone will argue that people are smarter now than they were 300 years ago but the difference between then and now is back then they didnt have the access to knowledge like we do now. Theres a serious problem with the new trend of "anti-intellectualism"and "ignorance pride", people actually think more of themselves because theyre ignorant.

The increased ease with which information and communication flow has been a kind of curse and a blessing.

Firstly, its a bit of a "curse" since the means of communication (like the media) is essentially monopolized by huge capital - in turn this allows capital in state power to perpetuate its propaganda through various corporate mediums on a scale more extensive than any ever known before in history. This is the "One Dimensional" society Herbert Marcuse refers to - the monolithic, all enveloping embrace of bourgeois socio-political culture and in turn the entrenching of the mode of accumulation.

Though today scientific advances have made huge qualitative leaps in technology leading to increased understanding in all the fields of science which in turn have impacted how we all live - this scientific knowledge, as the article I posted earlier in this thread shows, is monopolized by plutocratic monied interests. The population at large is left to gape and wonder in awe at how these mystical scientific technocrats funded by big capital or big capital working through the state, achieves such wonders some of which are being made from rare resources being mined by some of the most oppressed people on Earth.

While the latest information on scientific discoveries is held for ransom, general factual knowledge has indeed become more prevalent - only a few choose to, or can pursue it though as the need for survival or working to make ends meet becomes the primary goal while the mass media-disney-land-video-game distraction that is late capitalist society serves as the new opiate.

The Tea Party crazies and the lame Democrats do not have much of political constituency in the US. Recent polls indicate that the Tea Party is less popular than both the Christian right and Muslims. Islam is more popular than the Tea Party.Obama's approval rating is close to a record low for any president at this point in his administration. The craziness in the US isn't a sign that humanity is "de-evolving", its a sign that the bourgeois is politically bankrupt.

The US media gives saturation coverage to celebrity gossip and OMG trivia partly because of market pressure but also because the ruling class doesn't want people to think too hard. Its not a sign that people are becoming stupid rather that capitalist society is becoming stoopider.

I know HG Wells was a Fabian. I always wondered about "The Time Machine" in relation to Marxism. The book struck me partly as liberal Charles Dickens style social commentary. well's "The Shape of things To Come" his view of a non-Marxist non-working class future socialist revolution was trippy if wrong headed.
