I'm trying to eat healthier and eat more greens, but I find that a lot of green leafy things taste bitter and bad to me. However, when I eat out a lot of time the plain iceberg lettuce tastes a lot different and better than the store-bought iceberg lettuce. Is there some difference in preparation or type? Also general tips on making tasty salads/healthy things. Thanks.

Dandelion greens: find 'em anywhere. Use 'em in a salad or use them for a cooked green.

You could blend greens into a smoothie, you can hardly taste 'em:lol:

or so I hear (I only have experience with green beans not sure about salad leaves...not sure what they are called)

hope it helps

It's funny, I actually used to do that. I don't recall it being very satisfying or filling though. Can always give it a try though.

Bag salad is always shit. I really dig spinach. Baby spinach leaves make an awesome salad base.

How 'bout romaine lettuce? Make a ceasar salad with chicken or smoked salmon. Or try shredded cabbage with sesame dressing. Iceberg lettuce contributes nothing nutritionally, so it tends to be unhealthy if the dressing is fattening. I switched to greens years ago because my sister is a nutritionist and harped on everyone. But now I don't like iceberg at all. Greens are an acquired taste I guess.

A nice dressing is the key to a tasty salad. If you want to keep it simple, just olive oil and balsamic or white wine vinegar will do. From there you can add all kinds of stuff. Also, if your store-bought lettuce tastes bitter, maybe you just need to wash it? You know, pesticides and such. Watercress and rocket can add a nice bit of spice to a salad, but they're not to everyone's taste.

Grow your own! Iceberg lettuce has no nutritional value, its all cellulose and water. So grow heir loom varieties. Also kale and chard and collards are easy to grow and really good for you.

o well this is ok I guess

Bacon, man. Tried bacon in a salad once, man, best salad ever.
These days I don't even add the greens. I just toss in the bacon and the dressing and mix that shit up.

But on a more serious note, when eating greens I don't like I throw in mint leaves and use a simple lemon juice-olive oil dressing. Barely taste the spinach, man.

salad greens are always better when they're combined. for example, i can't take watercress by itself, but its bitterness adds a nice twist when mixed with regular lettuce. mix dark greens with juices, for example
