Yeah that's right!

I was smoking some homegrown the other day when it hit me...

Birthdays are capitalist bullshit.

1st: It's funny how our existence is only remembered once a year. A 365 day gap to celebrate the fact that we live on. And most surprisingly, it's the only day we take offence when someone forgets we exist, and we take into consideration when people we haven't spoken to in months doesn't remember to say "Happy Birthday".

2nd: Human Anniversaries are just a way to take our hard-earned money. We are morally forced to spend money on objects just to satisfy the person who aged another year's consumerism. Plus why the fuck does the present have to be a surprise? More often than not we buy crap they didn't even need.

We should be remembered all through the year. I crave a random parties just to remember a person is here, not for a 365 day Gregorian Calender gap, but for any day that we want, by comrades that really do care about us, and only them.

But if everyone was "remembered" or made to feel special any day of the year then it would all be the same and it wouldn't be special anymore.

No it wouldn't. I could have a party tomorrow in honor of my best-friend, and people could be invited without thinking "WTF" as soon as this birthday bullshit is abolished.

How awesome is that? :thumbup1:

Stop trying to ruin the only good thing going for me right now. My birthday is on January 1st which means it doesn't matter if people forget my birthday or not, there's always a party.

I stopped celebrating my birthday because:

1. edit: nvm to much info hope no one saw that XD

but more so because of

Exactly! I show up to a party and there is an entrance fee. I just say "It's my birthday man YEAH!" and they let me in for free. People say I need to chip in if I want to smoke with them and I just say "Are you kidding me, it's my fucking birthday YEAH!" and I get that for free. Etc, etc.

I agree with FightTogether, the fact we are still alive is not an achievement! It's no fun stressing over what to buy someone for their birthday so I just decided to give up on the whole ceremonial exchange of gifts during holidays thing...it's unbelievably liberating to do so...

There is a difference between celebrating birthdays and buying in on the capitalist consumerism related to it.

They are still pointless compared to my newly crowned existance parties.

The only presents I get on my birthday, is from people buying me drinks at a club/bar, or wherever. I don't see what the problem is there, everyone wins.

Not for nothin', but I just had a birthday earlier this week... Normally I get really depressed around them for a lot of reasons, but this one was absolutely awesome. I helped out in a direct action to protest police brutality, got my drink on, and my mom sent me a photo album filled with pictures of me as a kid... That also included pics of dear relatives who've since passed away, a nephew whom I haven't had the financial resources to even meet yet and a niece whom I practically raised for the first year of her life that I haven't seen in over two and a half years. Yeah, pretty much the best birthday I've had since I turned 21.

In some places the anniversary of your day of birth isn't a big deal. For example, in Korea, people often think more of the first day of the new year......

So they get depressed about aging and being alone at different time than you do. Cheers.

Is that directed at me?

Getting older is awesome.

Birthdays obviously aren't a capitalist thing but I agree they are rubbish. I hate my birthday. I find it embarrassing being the centre of attention and it's always a bit awkward trying to react positively to gifts. I am pretty indifferent to birthdays, I don't see how there is anything significant about them at all. Ok, I'm one day older than I was yesterday, doesn't really feel like anything special... Also getting cards just depresses me, I always just leave them all in a pile in the coffee table and throw them out, I don't like that people are obligated to waste money on something that I have no interest in receiving.

I would quite happily just not celebrate my birthday and treat it like any other day, but there are always people in your life who insist on you doing something or who organise something for you. I'd much prefer more infrequent celebrations for milestones that actually mean something, for example some a coming-of-age celebration, graduation, something to mark achieving financial independence from your parents and so on. Birthdays are also far too frequent , it's someone's birthday every other week pretty much.

I think the problem with birthdays is that there are certain types of people who care a lot about them, and enjoy those sort of rituals. In MBTI these are people who use extroverted Feeling, which relates to things like courtesy, manners, keeping in touch, and follows more of a collective moral code. People who use introverted feeling don't naturally think about these things, and also don't really care that much about receiving gifts and so on, for them friendship is marked simply by mutual understanding and appreciation of one another's perspectives, values, and purpose in life. But yet we are forced to take part in the extroverted Feelers economy of friendship against our will. Fe types on the other hand hardly ever bother to reveal their inner world or to truly understand the inner world of Fi types, yet we don't go in a sulk about this like they do if we forget to wish them happy birthday.

The people who complain about birthdays are the people who care the most about them and complain if someone doesnt remember theirs.

I like birthdays more for the excuse to have a party and get wasted with some good friends. Although I generally tend to feel awkward arranging parties because I worry that nobody will turn up haha.

I've changed my stance, birthdays are bullshit. My sister just had her birthday yesterday and it almost ruined my whole day. I don't want to go to my sister's birthday thing but she's family so I have to which is bullshit. You have to buy shit for people that they're not really going to be excited so much about anyways because I can't buy shit that is very expensive but you feel obligated too. Same with cousins, friends, etc. Thoroughly bourgeois it is.

Yeah it sucks, the only day I can hang out with friends and I get a call from mom "Hey you're coming to your sisters birthday right." Fuck! I wanted to get high, not spend money on my sister but then both my mom and sister would guilt trip me later. Suffice to say it was a pretty sober night :( Fuck birthdays, they are reactionary!
