I got stung, by what I believe is a yellow jacket, just a bit ago. My thumb is pretty swollen and hurts quite badly. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Idk, wasp stings are pretty much like bee stings to me, maybe some slight swelling and a little pain but not that bad. Maybe a picture would help.

Ya i'd say that's pretty normal, if it's really annoying you take an anti-histamine like diphenhydramine or chlorphenamine.
If you stop breathing consult a doctor :p

I consulted myself and that was my diagnosis. Still I wanted a second opinion from you fine gentlemen/ladies.

I'm allergic to bee and wasp stings - when I am stung I get major swelling, redding of the area around the sting and immense pain. If I'm stung on the hand it would paralyse that arm in a matter of hours and I would slowly regain use of the limb over the course of a fortnight. (At least that's what happened the one and only time I've ever been stung.)
If it's less sevre than that then I suggest you suck it the fuck up and quit your whining ;)

I grew up in Florida as well, Doc, and my dad was an ex-hippie type so he had us all running around the woods and beaches the whole time we were growing up. Long story short, I've been stung by damned near everything that state has to offer and your reaction is quite normal. People who think bee stings are bad have probably never been stung by anything else... Yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, all that shit hurts way worse. Even dog flies are worse because they bite your ass over and over again, as opposed to insects with stingers who'll get you once and then leave you alone after that.

Yeah, I'm not much of the outdoors type, in fact the only thing I avoid more than cops is the myriad of nasty bugs this state offers. I'm also quite allergic to spiders and it wasn't reacting like a spider bite so I figured I was fine. Main concern was that it was not reacting like the last time I got stung by a yellow jacket. Ends up my numbness and pain up my arm was a result from the location of the sting and the nerve endings and veins getting constricted and pinched by the swelling. Still I lost 25 bucks because I couldn't work last night without use of my left hand. So it cost me, little bastard.

I am a little bit of an outdoors type but not nearly as gung ho as most of the folks I know who are. I kind of scaled back all that stuff in my adulthood. But yeah, that's what you get living in a state that is basically tropical where it isn't outright swampland. And we haven't even gotten started on the mosquitoes the size of B-52s or the jumbo sized flying cockroaches known as palmetto bugs.

If you dampen some tobacco and press it against the sting, it will draw out the toxins. I live in Louisiana, they feed us this sort of emergency information while we still be on the teat.

I've had some experience with wasp stings this summer (b/c of summer work out in the forest) - they hurt a bit even after 1-2 days. So yeah, it should be normal.
