i would like to gauge people's opinions on the validity of unions in the MODERN workplace...not the ideals and situations they were founded upon

Are you asking if unions have lost their validity in the modern workplace?

In my oppinion, yes they are. They still do support the goals of the workers and push for the betterment of the laborers, but they seem, in a sense, watered down. In America I believe that only 18% of the workforce are in a union, so the unions these days have very little power.

Frankly, I wish that there would be more unions in countries that need them, such as third world or developing countries.

i figured my avatar might stir up some shit...but i'm up for it...i do agree that there are third world countries that could use unions...hey, we usd to be a third world country of sorts after all, weren't we?

however, i believe that in the modern workplace, unions have lost their needs in most situations...in certain facets of industry, wages have spiraled up out of control so much that manufacturers are forced to look for workers elsewhere...it has come to the point where they are losing money to pay out of control wages

Not all unions are left wing; for example the BMA - British Medical Association and the BAR which represents barristers are both very powerful and far from being left wing.

The BMA opposed the NHS because they thought that they would lose out in terms of profits which they made from private patients and the BAR is very conservative in that they are opposed to refroms such as the legalisation of marijuana. Because these groups are all inclusive they are very powerful and coupled with their wealth they often have an unfair advantage over the activities of the government which can be negative for democracy.
