I find it kind of overrated. It's a great movie and the cinematics are impressive, but I just can't sympathize with a lot of the characters. Obviously you're supposed to despise them to some extent, but besides the protagonist, I have a hard time caring about what happens to any of them. It's still a really good story, but I don't feel as involved in it as I do other Gangster movies, like the Godfathers.

If I had to name 20 favorite movies Goodfellas would be #11, While I think the Godfather is more artistic and better done, when it comes to entertainment value Goodfellas wins

Ray Liotta's narration and Joe Pesci's enthusiastic vocabulary make the movie for me. It pretty much desensitized me to 'profanity' when I watched it as a teenager. I don't like the movie much after Hill gets into the drug trade, though: he becomes a pathetic paranoid.

An excellent film. See Mean Streets for another great Scorsesean examination of hoodlum life.

Joe Pesci's greatest moment
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/) [Ray Liotta]: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/) [Joe Peschi]: What do you mean I'm funny?
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy. [laughs]
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): What do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
Anthony Stabile (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0012376/): Tommy no, You got it all wrong.
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): Jus...
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): What?
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): Just... ya know... you're funny.
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fucked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the fuck am I funny, what the fuck is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
Henry Hill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000501/): [long pause] Get the fuck out of here, Tommy!
Tommy DeVito (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000582/): [everyone laughs] Ya motherfucker! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering prick ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.RED DAVE

Yeah I can understand that, although I did find Pesci's character quite likeable until he kind of crossed the line into complete psychopathy
An excellent film. See Mean Streets for another great Scorsesean examination of hoodlum life.
I actually think that's one of my least favourite Scorcese films, it's still good and there's some great scenes (the Pool hall fight especially) but I just felt like I'd sat there for 2 hours and nothing had really happened; the plot didnt seem to follow any set direction and there were a few random events which looked like they might be significant or built upon later and weren't
Casino is a much better Scorcese film in my opinion, almost up there with Goodfellas

Excellent film in cinematic terms, very entertaining too. After seeing Goodfellas and Casino when I was around 12, I though Joe Pesci was an utter badass. Then I saw this:

My favourite Scorcese films are Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. They are the Scorcese films you have to see. Oh, After Hours as well.

I really enjoyed Taxi Driver especially its trippy ending.
