1944 - Germans surrender Paris to the Allies.

At 19:00 local time, General Charles de Gaulle - leader of the Free French lived in exile in London since the Fall of France in 1940 - entered the city. In a broadcast to the nation from the Hotel de Ville he said: "I wish simply from the bottom of my heart to say to you: Vive Paris!"

1967 - George Lincoln Rockwell shot dead.

The leader of the American Nazi party, George Lincoln Rockwell, was shot and killed by a sniper at a shopping centre in Arlington, Virginia.
Minutes after the shooting a "captain" in Rockwell's Nazi party, John Patler, 29, was arrested and charged with his murder.
