View Full Version : Che & his women

Does anyone have any clue as to why Che married and had a child with Hilda Gadea? I understand she was very smart and also had left wing views but my word, didn't she have a face like a bag of spanners...
Remember that picture of them together at Chichen itza? She looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp... Could this be why he ran off to war?
Ok, it's feacitious (sp?) so am I right now...Condem me if you will (feminists) but Iv'e always wondered what he saw in her ( besides her money and contacts).

My anticipation:
As Che is a natural born lover (love for people, women, liberty, etc) & he feels he has owed Hilda something (She takes care of him. the links, etc), this leads him to marry her out of responsibility and for appreciation's sake !? When he is out on projects/excursions, he can get on any women anyway~
Excuse me for my frank and seemingly offensive guess.. but.. yes, it is just a guess~

So you think he felt that much of an obligation he had to marry her? He always struck me as violently unsentimental even with his own mother...

Are you kidding? I always felt he was fiercely passionate about everything from women to the revolution. Listen to some of his recorded speeches and tell me he wasnt passionate!

This plus, maybe he actually loved her for these things as well.

hmm.. not as bad as an obligation, but, maybe something that came out from his conscience.
Violently unsentimental? .....Didn't Che & Che 's mom had a great relationship ,, they are like friends~ aren't they? :o

Passionate, definatley!... Unsentimental is what I said, he was blase about his own death in the casual letters he wrote home, this must have caused his dear old mum no end of anguish...God bless her..

Che came from a background of husbands being uncaring to their families; his father was often at work till late and very partiarchal over the family so it was the environment in which he was brought up and it seemed to have rubbed off on him. Che was a very passionate man who showed love and affection to his children but had many other passions which he had to fulfill - for example travel and the revolution. This collected together to mean that he did not have enough time to be passionate enough for all people and things in his life and he seemed to prioritise the revolution as being more important as his family. Imagine if it had been different?

I heard that in Bolivia Che had an affair with Tanya the russian KGB agent who was attached to the group and that she may have been carrying his child which was part of the reason that she did not want to leave the rebels and return to La Paz when she had the chance and stayed with them in the jungle. But this may not be entirely reliable.
I also heard that on his motorcycle adventure across South America he had a few passionate affairs and nearly got roped into marrying a girl at the insistance of her father. He made a quick get away from that and set off on the road again.

Some theories point that we look for a mother/father figure in our partners.
If that's true concerning hischoice of women we can have a hint of why he choose Hilda.
Hilda had liberal thoughts and attitutes, like Che's mom, and physicaly she reminds me of his dad.
With Aleida, she has finer features andreminds me physicaly of his mom,but even after Aleida's part in the revolution I sense she's a classic lady in her private life.
Truly Che had his tastes,...be a little 'odd' for today's standards of beauty but that what made him so unique. He could be with a partner he loved not minding her looks, age, nationality or what people said. ;)

I read about this one girl he almost married before he left argintina for is motorcycle journey with his friend alberto. her parents didn't really approve though, and the relationship never worked out. It's kind of odd to thinkt hat if he had married that girl, he may never have become the revolutionary we all know and love...

if i should tell the truth: i don't like her! she was only two years older than him, but she looked with 27years like 50. i don't like her! in one book, they write, that he married her because she did so many things for him.. or that he only want to have someone to talk and discuss.. i really don't know!
but i know that i don't like her!!

Che was probably attracted to Hilda as a sort of mother figure. She though him a lot, I think.
I'd imagine that he just fell in to marrying her. He thought it was the right thing to do, some of his friends at home were probably marrying at that age and what not.
Their relationship was pretty shaky at all times, I think.

Che was 27, he was born May 14, 1928....don't know yet how old Hilda was, she died in 1974.
Che did admit to a friend, when asked why he ever married a woman as "ugly" as Hilda, that although she was not physically beautiful, she had been a great "companera" to him and, in her defense, added that a person didn't have to be beautiful to be good in bed.

I always believed that che married her because she did many things for her. according to Jon Lee Anderson Che wrote in his diary that he married her because she had done so much for her and not because she was the prettiest girl in town...eventhough she was a bit ugly Che said that she was like an animal in bed. Maybe that's one more reason to marry Hilda ;)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Remember that one. I think one my buddy's gf is ugly, but he thinks she the hottest girl in the general area. It's his life not mine. If Che married and ugly women, then good for him, whatever floats his boat. My gf might not be concidered pretty by all, but I think she's damn hot. Hilda doesn't change my views toward Che and his thoughts/actions.

First off the thread's title does not read - "Che had an ugly wife", read it!
Secondly, I find it an interesting subject and evidently others do also...
Thirdly it is a lighthearted look at Che's personal life not a malicious attack on Hilda Gadea - this forum is about Ernesto and his personal as well as political life... As I said in the first post I acknowledge it's slightly faeceitcious and I was in a mischivous mood...

If Hilda had another appearance -if she were a very pretty woman for example-she would probably be another person. She would have been a regular woman;probably she wouldn't have any interest in politics ,she would have got married in an early age,she wouldn't have met Che, she wouldn't have introduced him to Nico Lopez,Lopez wouldn't have introduced him to Fidel & Che wouldn't have taken part in the cuban revolution.Yeah maybe we wouldn't know ANYTHING about Che if it wasn't for Hilda. Maybe Che felt this woman was his lucky charm..... :D .....so he didn't want to lose her.
