View Full Version : What American TV shows do you really like?

I watch so many now!

I like best The Big C, True Blood, South Park, Family Guy, Community, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives, and lots of documentaries that get posted online from PBS, Discovery Channel, History Television, and so on. (Although, I get most of my documentaries from BBC, it's good! And Doctor Who comes from there too, yay!).

I also like Project Runway, America's Next Top Model, Oprah, The Soup (only for that hot but weak Scandivanian boy from Community).

I'm forgetting many, I'm sure. Which do you like? Any recommendations based on my preferences?

I tried Breaking Bad, no, not for me. Also, the shows like American Idol, The Office, etc... that are copied from Europe, I already know the European versions so I watch those.

I really like Children's Hospital, Hell's Kitchen ("fucking donkey!") and No Reservations.

I like most of the ones in the OP's list (point of order actually, Joel McHale was doing The Soup before Community) except for Desperate Housewives and the talk/reality stuff... I'd also add Louie; it's probably the funniest damned show on TV right now and it's still a bit of a hidden gem. I really relate to Louis CK's character because he's sort of an externalization of the way I feel on the inside, completely miserable but still capable of laughing at things.

Beyond that, The Walking Dead is suuuuper dope and I'm kind of looking forward to this new series American Horror Story that hasn't come out yet. Weeds and Game of Thrones are pretty damned good as well, though the latter can't properly be classed as American as I believe it's an HBO and BBC co-production.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Big Bang Theory, 'cause I'm nerdy like that.

South Park
The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
Breaking Bad

That's all I got for now.

Curb Your Enthusiasm can be funny. South Park, at its best, is in a funny-league of its own.

And looking forward to the new 'season' of Boardwalk Empire.

If they don't have to be current, I think The Shield was the best TV show to come out of the US and A.

Adult Swim. Pretty much that since my damn Sci Fi shows get cancelled. I also like Hells Kitchen and will probably enjoy Terranova as well.

I'm interested that hells kitchen (a clone of a british show, btw) has come up. On paper it's quite awful - I mean, talk about management pitting workers against each other, and that show doesn't exactly bring out the best in people...

This may be true however I think of it like this. I think the hellish aspect aka that of some Brit screaming in your face while trying to prepare food for bourgy fucks, competing against other chefs while also trying to initially work as a cohesive unit in such an enviroment and all the other aspects of the show and the challenges seperates those whom can hack it and those whom can't. It's a competition in the truest sense of the word. There are those whom can tolerate the bullshit, be fueled by it, become better at their culinary prowess, art, skills, etc. and shine and there is those whom crack under the pressure, crumble and fail. To me it's like watching Iron Chef times 11. Don't get me wrong, the original Japanese Iron Chef was brilliant but I love Hell's Kitchen. If I could figure out a way how, I'd sign up to be on it. Plus, it's hilarious.

I like it because its an intense cooking show. I also like Iron Chef, Master Chef etc. I know that Ramsay and his crew are pricks, but its a pretty entertaining show to watch.

Television has very little to offer here, unless you are willing to pay for film/scifi/documentary channels. Nothing but reality garbage, cooking shows and stupid fucking renovation programs. This is why I don't watch telly. Thank the Omnissiah for torrents. I'm a big fan of both western and japanese animation, but it feels like we are living in the dark age of animation. Nothing but unfunny family guy shit. There are some wonderful exceptions here and there though.

Currently though:
House
The Walking Dead
CSI: Miami
Mythbusters
Lots of Discovery shows, like Colony
Adventure Time
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Oggy and the Cockroaches
The Boondocks
South Park
Pasila (finnish animation about cops, pretty funny)
Robot Chicken
Regular Show

To be honest, perhaps a bit but more I like to see people realize their full potential that they didn't think they had without going through the fire.

I watch so many now!

Yeah I hafta say while American movies have gotten progressively worse and adverse to risk since 1999, American television has been getting better since the early 1990s or so and especially in the last decade (still 80% shit, but that's down from 99% before The Simpsons, Seinfeld, and Sopranos).

A lot of shows I like have been mentioned, but "The Wire" and "Lost" are the shit though IMO. And I generally can't stand cop shows or Matthew Fox!

Beyond that, The Walking Dead is suuuuper dope and I'm kind of looking forward to this new series American Horror Story that hasn't come out yet.
Yeah about fucking time they figured out the horror genre for television. It's been like "Twilight Zone" (and the similar shows from that era)... then bullshit... then "Twin Peaks"... for the first 40 years of US TV.

I agree with this overall analysis, but I think Seinfeld is definitely (white, urban/suburban) America's monty python - in that apart from a few pretentious foreigners, hardly anyone outside its very, very specific target demographic find it remotely funny and just basically scratch their heads as to what is so great as its fan base claims it is. It is full of arcane "in-jokes" that while perhaps clever, strike the rest of the world as a bit forced and tire of its lack of any real nuance.

This isn't a bad thing, actually. Every culture needs (and for better or worse has) its sorry excuse for a supposedly near-universally popular comedy show.

To be honest, perhaps a bit but more I like to see people realize their full potential that they didn't think they had without going through the fire.

Huh, I guess I see your point but I can't ignore the fact that people "rise" only because other people fail to achieve their dreams.
