Hello everyone!
My name is Tomás, 19 years old, and I am from Chile.
I have been a leftist since i was about 11-12 years old, it is very strange for someone like me to be on the left because my family is kinda right wing (although i have made them look at social issues in a different way).
The leftist scene in my country is pretty nice, it is big at a university professor, professional, working class level...Not so much in the political or economic side (the left parties in my country hug neoliberalism).
I started as a communist, then an anarchist...Now i am a independent leftist (i tend to combine many things).
Next year i start my undergraduate studies in sociology (or anthropology) which lasts 5 years.

Good to see someone from Chile! Glad to have you here. Chile seems to have a strong left tradition, and the recent demonstrations of free-education show that.

Hope you stick around, enjoy your stay.

Yes for more than 3 months now. The protests grow bigger and bigger, last sunday some say 400.000-1.000.000 people in a cultural event.

For those who do not know, we are protesting for:

-Promoting public education.
-A real end to for profit schools and universities (it is illegal but the goverment lets them get away with it).
-Free higher education, or at least cheaper...Because it is one of the worlds most expensive higher education systems. For example medicine costs like 6500 per year (7 years of underg.)...Students have to pay nearly double what it cost because of interest rate (with the loans).
-More democracy in higher education, so people can have a word on the people who control the uni.
-A higher spending on higher education, because it is very low.
-For profit unis and schools have a very bad quality.

People want a real change not "simple" reforms, we want a new constitution, made by the people...Every single constitution in Chile was made between four walls, the last one was Pinochet´s constitution.
