97% of muslims self-identify as "moderate", but that is by their standards.
In Pakistan I imagine the majority is conservative but in the West the majority is moderate.

Considering the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world don't all wake up and call for Islamic law or advocate for the killing of non-Muslims, I'd be confident in guessing that extremists are in the minority, not the majority. There are more Christian extremists than Muslim extremists, especially in positions of power.

Listening to "some Americans" on the subject of Islam is about as worthwhile a way to assess the state of things as listening to "some Americans" on socialism. You're asking kids to describe their boogeymen.

The trouble is with the words "moderate" and "extremist" etc.
Just how do you define "moderate"? Moderate in comparison to what? It's too subjective.

The adults are too conservative here, but the kids are normal, they drink, smoke, fuck, and party just like any other kids... The next generation of Muslims will be more progressive, and probably religiously nihilistic like most people in the U.S. It's not really an issue...

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but are you equating progressiveness with drinking, smoking, fucking and partying?

It's something most kids do in the United States so I'm just pointing out that Muslim kids aren't an exception in that they aren't allowing cultural or religious values get in the way of 'having fun'...
