Just wanted to show you guys how close we are to full robotization of the workforce.

The girl, take a real good look at her.

HRP-4 the latest development
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoSuETw68zc

HRP-2 the old model
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw2U2vgDX2c

There's one more that's more advanced but I can't seem to find it. We are literally only as far away from the robotization of the workforce as the capitalists will allow, plus maybe 20 years.

And this is what a typical industrial robot looks like

http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home2009/MOHA0157/images/industrial_robot.jpg

Robotization of the workforce isn't going to happen because they slap a silicone skin on a frame that couldn't lift 50 kilos.

actually they can lift a good bit now. and what sillicone skin are you talking about I assume you only saw the first video.

A robot sitting on a chair making faces or doing pre-programmed poses is not going to automate anything.

The technology needed to get her off the chair to cook me a meal or install a fence or fix my roof is light years ahead of what is shown in those videos.

However, I think we can automate 55% of the work we do with existing technology:

1. Office and Admin support (19.2 million jobs)
These are low level employees who do routine tasks. Most can be automated today. But the process will be much easier in a socialist system. If we had standards for sharing all data and documents as well as easy access to all business data in a central location you would not need armies of employees to shuffle paper.

2. Sales (16.2 million jobs)
Most sales can be done over the internet.

3. Management (15.8 million jobs)
Most of these management jobs are actually sales managers which the internet can automate.

4. Transportation (8.8 million jobs)
We already have the tech for driverless cars and trucks. All that is needed is a government effort to create the infrastructure that makes driverless cars work on our roads.

5. Food prep and related (7.8 million jobs)
These are mostly people who work in restaurants. Industrial robots can automate any chef. And moving a plate of food from the kitchen to a table does not require a human being.

6. Business and Financial Operations (6.2 million jobs)
These are accountants (not needed with digital banking since purchases and sales are categorized digitally as they happen), loan officers (credit is automated), retail purchasers (retail is largely obsolete with the internet), etc.

7. Buildings and Ground Maintenance (5.4 million jobs)
We already have automated mowers, blowers, rakers, window cleaners, vacuum cleaners, etc. so most of these jobs can be automated.

They amount to about 75 million of the 135 million jobs we do.

You are 100% wrong watch the last video. and that robots been through two more model since that video. the only thing left is really artificial intellegence, and we've been making headway into that. or at least self learning robots.

Here, here's a better video

the video calls it an HRP-4 I believe it to be the HRP-4C the gynoid. Not the athletic model.

Robotization of the workforce is cool and all, but it shouldn't be used as a justification for communism.

Why not? shouldn't we use any justification we can get that will give us real world results?

You know a lot of that isn't even robotization but computerization. Now when you get to retail the japanese have had some limited success with employee less shops. Mostly convenience stores.

We certainly are making large strides in technology, but the videos with the rubber faces creep me out.

Also, why say robotization instead of mechanization? I don't think robotization is even a word.

Also, I think this belongs in the Science forum, not history.

Getting a robot to do a pre-programmed dance is simple. Getting it to repair my roof which is technology you say is "the only thing left" is the hard part and light years ahead of what is in those videos.

Because there will be a few last jobs that mechanization won't be able to handle for some you will need a more humanoid like robot. maybe not bipedal but of similar dimensions and abilities. And yes the first bot is creepy, and unfortunately we are several decades maybe even centuries away from sex bots. But one thing at a time. If we can push these through to full development and into production. Complete a self learning program I think I could live without a sex robot.

speaking of futuristic sex robots

Prediction of the future is very tricky when it comes to tech. Better to use the critique of capitalism and our successes as our justification.

No, but our focus should be on the more reliable.

Those silicon faces are really scraping at the bottom of uncanny valley. Hell, I'd prefer to have domestic robot with clearly metallic voice and TV screen with cartoon faces as face. Then add a little tuxedo or french maid tiara and name it Halsworth or Henrietta. That would be cutest thing ever.

"Halsworth, would you kindly get rid of these flies here?"
*metallic british stiff upper lip accent* "Why, with pleasure! /switches to Megatron-voice *VERMIN ERADICATION MODE ACTIVATED; WEAPON RESTRICTION PROTOCOL DISENGAGED; LETHAL FORCE PROTOCOL ENGAGED; ENGAGING THE ENEMY; EAT ELECTRIC DEATH INVERTEBRATE SCUM*"

Unless they are really human-like, they are very, very creepy. I think that most people would prefer obvious robot features instead of something that bleakly tries to imitate human.

does that include self checkouts at supermarkets?

anyway, the more the workforce is automated, the less profits the capitalists make (because variable capital is required to produce surplus value), so the sooner all the above shit hits the fan, the sooner capitalism's gonna collapse.

I don't think the robot manufacturers care, and all the other corporations only know that it's cheaper. I firmly believe capitalism is going to continue down this road and in conjunction with the current crisis patter just wipe itself off the face of the map. Marx told us capitalism had in itself the seeds of it's own destruction, we're just getting to see it.

also:

and at the mall of georgia we already have automated electronics vending machines with ipods and PS3's in them.

Oh I agree, and If I ever have a robotic butler I'm so totally redesigning the the thing to look like a mobile suit. ... actually the HRP series is already very anime like.

Also HALsworth..... really?

I agree. That's what I meant... they're short sightedness will lead to their downfall. They make their own grave diggers in so many ways! Just because it can get them a quick buck .

That reminds me of HK-47, resident robotic sociopath hero. It would be so boss to hang out with murderous assassin droid with dry sense of humor.

o well this is ok I guess

I have mixed feelings when I read threads like this. On the one hand, I marvel at such a time I/we live in currently and the technological advances the species is making. On the other, I get pissy because currently we live under capitalism which means currently such advances would do nothing but take jobs away from workingclass peoples. The idea of the full mechanization of the workforce under capital sounds dreadful.
