For Immediate Release:
Last Thursday, Mostafa Heneway, a committed ISM activist from Toronto, was released from Israeli prison on 5000 shekel bail ($1500 CND). We owe the good news of his release to lawyer Shamai Leibowitz, whose quick actions and appeal convinced a judge to release him without bail conditions despite a recommendation from the Israeli General Security Service that Mostafa should be deported. Mostafa was arrested early Wednesday morning while getting in a taxi. He was profiled by Israeli police for being of Arab ethnicity, and charged with minor visa infractions, despite the fact that he was neither engaged in political activity nor committing any illegal activity at the time of his arrest.
It is reported by his lawyer that Mostafa is feeling tired and worn-out after his imprisonment and long interrogation, but that he was not physically injured or brutalized while in jail. Mostafa is resting now, and will write a report describing the circumstances around his arrest as soon as he is feeling better.
Next week Mostafa will have a hearing in front of an Israeli judge where it will be determined whether or not Mostafa will be deported. If Mostafa is deported he will be barred from returning to Palestine for 10 years. We cannot allow this to happen. For all of us who know Mostafa, we know how committed he is to his work in Jenin and to the Palestinian struggle for justice. We desperately need funds so that Mostafa's lawyer can fight for him at this hearing! In total, we need to raise approximately $3000 CND to cover Mostafa's bail money, legal fees and court fees.
Mostafa joined the ISM in July of 2003. Although he originally planned to stay for only 2 months, the injustices of occupation he witnessed, and the perseverance of the Palestinian people inspired him to stay. He later became the ISM Coordinator in Jenin and is also the Coordinator of this year's Olive Harvest Campaign. If Mostafa is deported, the Israeli state will have once again succeeded in criminalizing solidarity and resistance.
If we can raise enough money for his bail and legal fees, we believe he has a very good chance of not being deported. Please help us.
If you can contribute to Mostafa's legal fund, or if you have any questions, please call Jennifer at 416-417-8962 or email [email protected]
