View Full Version : police want ban on video game

Various Christian law enforcement groups have colluded to express their distaste for upcoming 2K Games sequel, The Darkness II. They'd like to see it go very far away, in fact, for fear that it will make people hate the police. Go figure.
A large coalition, formed from the International Christian Police Fellowship, the Christian Police Association, the Swiss Christian Police Association and the Germany Christian Police Association have sent a letter to developers and politicians, complaining about game violence overall and singling out the first-person demon-tendril-simulator.
They believe games like The Darkness II promote hatred of law enforcers and "idealized violence" and that politicians should refuse to support the industry in order to stop real-world crimes. Because, as always, it's obvious that videogames are the reason why anything bad has happened, ever. Nobody's ever done something bad because of what they gleaned from the Bible, right?
I'm frankly more concerned that there are groups of police officers who identify themselves through the fact that they believe in things without needing any evidence. Not sure I'd want them handling any case I was involved in.

It should be noted: there is not one police officer in this game.

"Could it be the fact that we shot unarmed civilians that people are rioting and fighting us?"
"Nah, it's those damned Satanic videogames."

Christian Law Enforcement Association? So Fundie nuts with badges and guns with a supposed divine purpose? That combo could never go wrong.

The original game was interesting, it had a great atmosphere - very dark and brooding. I must admit I was more into in the Darkness itself rather than any of the other characters. Considering that the Darkness is a nihilistic Eldritch Abomination with some pretty horrifying powers, the Christianist reaction is understandable, but still laughable.

If you think that's bad, get a load of this: http://www.laprogressive.com/war-and-peace/americas-christian-soldiers-fight-for-jesus-in-afghanistan/
Dubya wasn't bullshittin' or engaging in hyperbole when he made all those speeches about a "righteous crusade against evil" apparently.

Never played this game but I don't see why specifically they would target this game when a) it doesn't involve any pigs b) the children could probably buy any of the GTA series regardless of whether they ban this game or not. I agree with whoever pointed out that maybe, just maybe, it's because of the unsolicited violence against the working class and the fact that you're tools of the bourgeoisie that people hate you.

I don't understand The Darkness isn't even about the police from what I remember about the game. I also remember that it wasn't very good, but I just glanced over the reviews, so I don't really know much about it. The funny thing is that now I feel like I want to play it, whereas before I wouldn't even have thought of it.

"The Darkness II takes place two years after the events of the first game. Jackie Estacado, the current wielder of The Darkness who has used his powers to become the Don of the Franchetti crime family. He has been unable to shake the thoughts of his dead girlfriend Jenny Ramano since he contained his supernatural powers and now The Darkness "wants out in the worst way". A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The assassination attempt leaves Jackie on the verge of death and with no choice but to release The Darkness, sending him on a mission to discover the mystery of the attack and the motivations of The Darkness himself. This quest brings Jackie to an abandoned carnival and into a confrontation with Viktor, a mysterious figure who knows what The Darkness is and wants his power for himself. Viktor is the head of a mysterious organization known as The Brotherhood, an ancient order formed hundreds of years ago by a corrupted saint for the sole purpose of controlling The Darkness.
So far there have been two demos that have been released exclusively to game critics and have been received with high praise. The first depicts Jackie being crucified and torched by a mob who want him to give up his powers. The second one shows Jackie experiencing an unexpected attack in a restaurant and then ultimately having a gun fight on the railway lines before being struck by an oncoming train."

The first game is GREAT. It seriously plays like a demonic mobster movie. I mean, some parts can be cheesy (like the part where you run through a boat killing everyone; it's one of those parts you just want to end), but overall it's great. I recommend it.
I'm interested in the motivation behind the Darkness after it was revealed that it runs in his family ...

Well they're Christian so they have to be the most "Moral and Pure" police groups, which probably just pointed to The Darkness II because they realized it hadn't been challenged by another Christian group atm.
