View Full Version : Why the Kremlin aids the rise of Russia's far right hate groups.

The country got a wake-up call late last year. For a few terrifying hours in December, history seemed to have come full circle at Manezh Square, as 5,000 angry youths rampaged through downtown Moscow, raising their arms in a Hitler salute and chanting Sieg heil! Some belonged to Belovs right-wing DPNI; others were fans of the Spartak football club, infuriated by the death of one of their number in a brawl with a gang of dark-skinned foreigners. Russia for Russians! the marchers screamed, hurling flares. Riot cops who fled too slowly were seized and beaten. As night fell, the rioters retreated into the Metro, where they ran amok all evening, beating hundreds of foreigners and stabbing two Uzbek laborers to death. Next time we will take Lenins mausoleum, vowed one DPNI man. And well smoke those traitors out of the Kremlin.
Russian history has featured plenty of racist violence, from anti-Jewish pogroms under the tsars to the surge of ultranationalism that followed the Soviet Unions collapse. But theres reason to regard the Manezh riot as a game-changing event, one that could shape Russian politics for years to come. Poverty and unemployment are feeding the xenophobia thats always near the surface of Russian society. Although soaring prices for crude oil and metals have tripled Russias GDP since the late 1990s, the conspicuous prosperity of some Russians has made life only more painful for the 30 percent who remain below the poverty line. The tension is worsened by the deep distrust, extending to hatred, felt on all levels against the corrupt police, bureaucrats, and authorities in general. And no one seems more angered by the countrys shortcomings than the alienated generation that grew up in post-Soviet Russia.

Oh the irony; the grandchildren of men who fought against the Fascists in WWII are now running around spitting on Lenin's name and glorifying the man that wanted to take everything away from them.

Russia seems more and more like the place where nazis and communists will eventually have open war, and the nazis will probably win since they've been preparing for it.

It's very ironic for Russian people to praise Hitler, seeing as he killed tens of millions of them and declared them as a sub-human, inferior race.
As for why the Kremlin is aiding the rise of those groups, it's because there are already many fascists and nationalists already in the Kremlin.

Exactly, Putin has spent a long time building a network with Ultranationalists that he feels he can work with while squashing those that oppose his "anointed" organizations. The situation is extremely disturbing in Russia because the Bourgeoisie are not only not trying to curtail the situation they are trying to cultivate it to lead to the rising of an even more Ultranationalist Regime that will allow them to move without hindrance.

Isn't over half of the world's Neo-Nazi's in Russia? It's amazing how these rats can organize and get a strong following among Russian youths, didn't the Soviet propaganda do anything? I wonder why people even listen to those fascists after WWII

Nationalism is a powerful tool the Soviets used often; where do you think the "For Mother Russia!" came from? Also remember that a lot of Russians(including Stalin) were anti-semetic, and that the "greedy capitalist" character is very easily turned to "greedy capitalist jew." With the failure of the Soviet Union and the horror of capitalization, people looking for a third position often find it in nationalism and nazism.

Had I been in Russia, I would have used it as an excuse to "defend," myself and cap as many fascists as I could. I do think the rise of far-right politics within the Russian federation is odd, given history. Just like I found the trend (I believe in Russia) of people beating up "immigrants," for no real reason to be odd and disturbing. If they tried to fuck with Lenin's body however, I would definately be whipping out the chopper and going to town.

stabbing two Uzbek laborers to death
Hmm... I haven't heard anything about that murder. As far as I know, the whole riots resulted in only one death (a Kyrgyz man was killed by a group of nationalists next day after the riots).
It's very ironic for Russian people to praise Hitler, seeing as he killed tens of millions of them and declared them as a sub-human, inferior race.Actually, the overall level of tolerance for all that pro-Hitler BS was significantly lowered during the last 10 years. As of today, only the most radical nazi groups or the most brainless football hooligans openly claim to be "hitlerists". The majority of "serious" nationalist groups now claim to be either supporters of Alexander III's monarchy (easily recognized by their use of black-yellow-white flag), or Stalin's USSR - mostly to escape the stigma related to Hitler's war crimes. But generally I'd agree that the level of support for various scum (perceived as "strongmen") in Russian society just sickens me. And it often is completely illogical - for example, it's not difficult to find anyone who likes Hitler, Stalin, Thatcher and Pinochet at the same time. And BTW, this "Stockholm syndrome" isn't limited to Russian society. For instance, Alexander the Great is viewed as national hero in modern Tajikistan, despite his brutal treatment of the people of Sogdiana (the ancestors of modern Tajiks). I've heard there's a lot of Hitlerists in Pakistan, India, and Malaysia, despite all these countries clearly aren't "white".
Russia seems more and more like the place where nazis and communists will eventually have open warCommunists?! There are simply not that many REAL communists in Russia to make any significant opposition to nationalists. As for pseudo-communists like KPRF - they've openly supported the rioters. And what's can be said for sure - in the future we'll see much more violent ethnic clashes, mostly because the government is unable (or maybe just doesn't want) to do anything to ease the situation...
Sorry for my bad English.

There's a lot of self-proclaimed "communists", but the majority of them are actually monarchists who view Stalin as the last Russian emperor, and love USSR because it had strong military, conservative culture and relatively low crime rate. The real communist and anarchist movements, however, are staring to appear, but they're still only a small minority.

Didn't Marxism do anything to you, with respect of your disregard for the basic postulate that social existence predominantly determines consciousness?

That makes sense though, after the fall of Communism people rush to the new system hoping for some apparent leap forward - hearing from capitalists how wonderful it is. It brings a supposed temporary gain for enough people that others think that they are next in line for the goods, when in reality it's not coming. Now that enough people have figured out that it's not coming there is a better political climate for real communists and anarchists to work in.
Forgive me if I'm inaccurate in that analysis.

This is probably true, sadly. Modern Communists have taken to being laid back hippies who are all talk and no muscle.
Pick up a rifle and train with it. Join your nations Army Reserve or Cadet unit if you're too young. Join up at your local gym etc. We may have the advantage in theory, but when it comes to muscle the fascists could club us like baby seals.
