Since 1995, the Province of Ontario [Canada] has been under the rule of a *Progressive* Conservative government that has sustained a relentless attack on the poor, public education, organized labour, health care, the environment, native rights, and now the right to political dissent.
The 3 crimes committed by this government that stand out most:
-neglect of water treatment facilities in Walkerton, Ontario [via cutting environmental inspector jobs all over the province] resulting in 7 deaths from E. Coli contaminated water and hundreds of sick citizens.
-the death of Kimberky Rogers, a single mother and university student from Sudbury Ontario, who did not report to the welfare office that she was receiving a provincial student loan, was charged with welfare fraud and sentenced to house arrest - and the custody of her kids threatened by the courts. Ms. Rogers was so scared of losing her kids that she stayed in her house during the summer heatwave (temp of 45 degrees celsius/ apx. 100 degrees farenheit) and died of heat exhaustion. Kimberly Rogers died because she was essentially charged and convicted of being poor and trying to make ends meet by getting more government funding to educate herself.
-On Sept 6, 1995 Dudley George of the Ahzoodena [Stoney Point} First Nation was shot and killed by Ontario Provincial Police for protecting and reoccuppying his peoples traditional land [that the provincial government took away from the Ahzoodena and transfered to the Canadian Military during WWII] at Ipperwash, Ontario. The Premier of Ontario [Head of the Province] Mike Harris, had reportedly met with O.P.P. a few hours before the shooting -- there is evidence of the Premier telling the cops to get the natives of the land, and to use force. Later, the result was the shooting/murder of the unarmed Dudley George. After 6 years, the George Family is still waiting for a Coroners Inquest into Dudley's murder, a public inquiry to reveal resposibilty for this gruesome crime, and still the Ahzoodena First Nation has not been granted their traditional land back [more info see http://dudleygeorge.org].
There is a grassroots campaign across the Province of Ontario to unseat this government [see http://ocap.ca] by economic disruption and direct action in the streets. The kickoff to the "Fight to Win" Campaign saw pemier Harris announce his resignation from office - because of all the pressure from groups all over Ontario. The boss is gone but the resistance goes on until the Progressive Conservative Gov't is out of office.
On October 26th to 28th, the Ontario Progressive Conservatives are having their Annual Policy Convention at the London Convention Centre. They will be working on policy behind closed doors. Policy that will effect all of Ontario. Mike Harris and his Tories have already given us a 60 hour work week, destroyed public education, torn apart public health care, killed Dudley George, removed environmental regulations and all the while, given bigger and bigger tax cuts to the rich. Some groups in London have organized *3 DAYS OF RESISTANCE* in London Ontario to try and disrupt and ultimately shutdown the tory policy convention.
Come to the Shutdown!
There will be activities running all weekend. Friday, October 26th will start with a Smudge Ceremony at the crack of dawn in Victoria Park.
