I'm new to the site.I'm a Marxist, formerly a democratic socialists, and before that I was a naive Libertarian. Feel free to initiate a discussion with me as I'm very open with my opinions and I want you to be the same way.I am currently without internet or a smartphone so it will be less frequently than I'd like that I can make long posts. This is, of course, temporary.I'd really like to meet other leftists that live here in the shit state of TX for starters.Great to meet you all!

How are you, comrade? What part of Texas are you from? I'm from Dallas and I am desperately in need of a goal-oriented organization with dedication to the cause.

The ISO has a branch in Dallas (http://internationalsocialist.org/branches.html). Dunno if that's the particular type of organization you want but they have branches all over the state, are activism oriented, and growing.

I am somewhat familiar with the ISO and I've spoken to some of their members. Unfortunately, they are not as adament as I am,about setting up the preliminary steps in an overthrow. Revolution in the modern age must be reduced down to a science. I love Che to death but some of his methods are not realistic. Right now, the internet is our greatest tool. It's essentially a database on everyone for those with the know-how. After all, if a bunch of loose-knit anonymous trolls can do DOS attacks and dox dumps, just imagine what a group of trained anarchists and communists could do. A revolution, whether a peaceful transition or a blood-soaked overthrow needs, planning stages, which we to start now.

Welcome

Actually a thread about this internet question might be good. Maybe when you can do the longer posts:)

IMO a lot of the internet stuff is more or less just modern sabotage. Kudos to those who found a weak point to exploit but as for organizing for worker's self-emancipation I can't see how it can go beyond a secondary support role. It's like a few people might take out a power grid or telephone lines (and did in past wars like the French Resistance) but it is much more potentially powerful and useful if telephone and electrical workers organized to control these tools themselves. In addition the process of organizing and working together that would be necessary would build confidence in practice among those people to realize that they can run things without bosses.

But it is a powerful tool, but a tool none the less. Cell-phones, and even regular phones, printing machines, photocopiers, cheap and mobile printing presses, wheat-pasting posters, etc, have all been useful tools in helping people organize themselves and the internet combines many of those things and is instantaneous. But our real strength is in organizing one on one and working together and in our numbers and labor power - the internet is just a tool to help us do that organizing.

Besides, if some internet hacktivists can take down some communication, the ruling class sure can too, so IMO we need to use everything at our disposal, but there are no technological "magic bullets".

I completely forgot to update my post; I'm now the proud owner of an Android phone so my posting is no longer limited.

As for the internet, I didn't mean we should shut it down...rather use it to do damage, as I mentioned before, as a preliminary stage. Credit card companies and businesses whose main goal is to fuck over the impoverished citizens if this country for profit have huge vulnerabilities to internet-based attacks. Theoretically, we could take down a company that isn't even located in the same country as us! Remember, internet security measures are created by people and they can always be countered. Perhaps ridding some of the citizens of their mountain of debt and exposing corruption within the government in such a way that people are forced to acknowledge it would help immensly. And, of course this is completely optional, blackmail is always a powerful tool. The internet is a database of everyone and their lives. With a good understanding of computers and the internet, you can tell what kind of pizza someone ordered from dominoes.com.

Right, no doubt. But my point was just that a handful of people taking down is not the same as large masses of people cooperatively taking over.

Oh, you're absolutely right about that. My worry is that people won't act unless prompted by seeing action taken by others with successful results.
