View Full Version : The fuck do I say to this? *awkward inside*

So I'm about to go to uni and they give all freshman a freshman mentor who's just a sophomore that helps us with basic shit like where do I get my books from, etc.

So we're shooting e-mails back and forth and through the course of our conversation I naturally reveal that I'm a Marxist and that I hold to anti-philosophy, he comes back with this.

I'm going to be straight with you from the get go. Most people will be full of "bullshit" but not me. I'll let you know how it is, about everything. If you talk to me, you can at the very least know that I tell you the truth.

By the way, I had xx [replaced obviously, this class from what I gather is basically, shit capitalism sucks, here's a bunch of liberal ways to cope, we get to meet a primmie who's lived in the wild for 30 years, fun] class. It was definitely interesting. It'll change the way you look at things. But no matter what classes you take in college, my best advice is this. Keep your views, understand and learn about new views, and adapt to them as you see fit. Do NOT drastically change your whole perspective just because of one class. I've seen too many people do that, and it just makes them look weak. So keep your views, and know what you stand for.

At times we will probably disagree with one another. Actually, we will most definitely disagree with one another. I can already tell. haha. Just letting you know. But, if you maintain your views and perspective, while having an open mind towards others. At the same time don't try to change others, and then we will do just fine.

I respect people with whom I can know where they stand on certain issues. EVEN if I don't agree with you, if I know where you stand, then I WILL respect you. I respect everyone, except people who are flip-floppy or like to blur the lines. I hope that by the time we've developed more of a mutual relationship, that you'll be able to immediately know where I stand on certain issues. I see the world in black and white. There is no gray for me. [WAT]

I understand you're an intellectual guy, and that's why I'm telling you all of this now. Most people wouldn't really understand or just try to shrug it off. But I can tell you're different. [wat] Just from the way that you present yourself in your choice of words and writing. So understand, I'm not being harsh or mean. I'm being REAL. And that's the best kind of thing you could hope for when arriving into college.

So without much further delay, college is going to be a great experience man. I'll do my best to not lead you astray. If you ever have questions or problems just let me know. I'll do my best to answer them. Get excited man, this year is going to be a different from anything you've ever experienced before.

That's probably the most awkward thing anyone has ever told me, I'm considering ignoring it and asking him what kind of music he likes >_>

Is it really awkward? What's so awkward about it? He's just saying to have an open mind, know your facts, and be yourself. He's a mentor, I guess this is pretty simple stuff.
This may of been his way of trying to rage at you while restraining himself.

I guess it's just awkward because we were sort of having a casual conversation and then he reveals that he's a goddamn sith (he only deals in absolutes man).

It just feels so awkward, I cringe while reading it and my other friends agree.

I guess I'd feel the same way if I was put into the situation. He ranted pretty long essentially about nothing. "Oh, you're a Marxist? Uh, er, well... keep your mind open! Please, know your facts, but if you changed your mind, that'd be cool... just know your shit!"

If you feel awkward, just don't reply. lol.

I don't think its awkward, I'd say I relate to that.

He's just saying, you guys aren't gonna agree, he knows what he thinks, he's not interested in changing his mind, and he's letting you know he doesn't think you should change your mind just to fit in.

Seems mature to me.

Denounce him as a reactionary defender of the bourgeoisie and as a counter revolutionary, it's the only option.

Seriously though, he does sound just a bit pretensions with the whole "I've been in college for a year, I've seen some things man" act. I don't blame you for finding that awkward at all, quite frankly I would probably just stop talking to him.

o well this is ok I guess

He's my freshman mentor though so I need to leech off of his past failures/learning experiences.

I'll think of something to say I'm sure eventually.

I would just say something like "Yeah man I'll remember that." then move on.

Language aside, this is more or less spot on. They are generally cherry picked from the lot of students for rather worthless qualifies like extroversion and extra circular involvement, not for their possession of any knowledge worthy of being considered valuable.

Most anything he will be able to tell you is either minuscule in its significance or something you could probably just get off your schools website, I'd imagine. Colleges love to initiate useless programs of this sort, perhaps to take you mind off of some of the more glaring issues confronting higher education. After all, if you and your freshmen mentor are having a grand old time talking about your favorite spots on campus to socialize, who is going to have the time to discuss book or tuition prices and to develop any disdain for such?

A valid point, I probably was a bit quick with terming him as outgoing in the traditional use of the term.

Not really to be honest. It isn't like College/Uni is a giant death-trap labyrinth...yet though with the way tution and books keep going up in prices it is pretty fucking close.

He is basically disagreeing with your opinion but doesn't want to say it like it is.
