View Full Version : Retracting a press statement

Any way to do it?
We agreed on a statement on Monday evening about the riots and sent it to the local paper. By Wednesday morning, the situation had changed so dramatically, that we decieded to retract the statement before it got printed and that was sent to the paper too with an apology.
The paper printed the original statement, heavily censored and edited today and it doesn't make it clear what the context is, or that it was describing a situation that was going on nearly a week ago.
Not sure what we should do. :/

publish the retractment as well as an explanation for it on the local indymedia, assuming there is one, any relevant local blogs, independent journalists website, any where!

Wait a minute, you sent a statement to the media on Monday and it was printed on a Saturday?
That seems bizarre - the media usually doesn't print things that are already a few days old.

Yup. That's what they did. I'm kinda expecting an angry backlash tomorrow.

theredson is right.
Not a lot you can do about the capitalist media. They're going to do everything they can and manipulate everything you say to make you look bad. Do what you can to explain the situation to people on your side, not a lot you can probably do about the local paper (in your part of the world I'm guessing it's not a great paper, but of course I can't say for sure).
If you could explain it, what was the problem with the original release?

The guy I sent it to is usually good, but he passed this one off to the letters team, which might be different people. I suppose it's not the end of the world really. The original release was about the rioting in Tottenham. Since then the situation has expanded away from Mark Duggan's murder, so printing it now makes us look like we're saying everyone's been out up and down the country about Mark Duggan, which isn't the case.
