View Full Version : Need Music Recommendations

The last month or two I've barely listened to music (which is incredibly rare for me). Worst of all, it's probably been months since I've discovered a new band that I really like. So I was hoping that some of you here can recommend me some music to listen to. Here's what I typically listen to:

I really like dissonant and atmospheric black metal bands (such as Xasthur or Agalloch), "well produced" sounding screamo (I've never gotten into bands like Orchid, but I love Sed non Satiata), post-metal bands like Rinoa, and "well produced" crust / neocrust (Ekkaia).

Dunno, probably not your cup of tea.

Dunno, probably not your cup of tea.

Depends on whether or not I'm in the mood. The only "J-metal" album I've really been into was Dir en Grey's Uroboros.

Anyways, here's another one of my favorite bands, Akutagawa.

Celeste
French "Blackened" screamo? Heavy as fuck, and probably the only "evil"-sounding band of skramz. I don't even know if I'd call it that... it's not exactly metal, and it's not exactly screamo. It's just loud. Ex-Mihai Edrisch

I know how much you love Sed Non Satiata and Daitro, so this may be for you. Melodic French Screamo just like those 2 bands, but with more tremolo picking.

I love Agalloch and other black metal as well, but I wouldn't place these two in the same category ("atmospheric black metal"). I'm not sure if you'd be into something like this, they're a controversial band in the aspect that they're not trying to be controversial. They're just kids playing black metal in their plain old clothes, and not trying to be evil and kvlt. They get a lot of hate, but honestly I think it's the necessary evolution of black metal, trying to make itself more mature and about the music rather than the ridiculously dumb image.

The drummer MAKES THIS BAND. It's not just simply blast-beats, he throws in odd-timing and so many snare rolls. ahhhh love it.

Here's a really good track from their first album, more dark and energetic than their new album
QIN5Hi9RRxc

Here's the new "single" from their new album. It's... different. One person said "it sounds like positive black metal, if that's even possible" I like their first album way more, but this new direction is enjoyable as well...
This is proof that Hanson simply renamed themselves and play metal now. Trippy video?

You may notice something about the 2nd song. There's almost no reverb, besides on the vocals. Almost every single black-metal band relies on heavy reverb to create a large atmosphere. I definitely think Liturgy is doing something new.

Depends on whether or not I'm in the mood. The only "J-metal" album I've really been into was Dir en Grey's Uroboros.

I didn't like anything Dir en grey did after Withering to death album (some might feel inclined to suggest that it's because they didn't wear makeup and sexy clothes anymore, but they had stopped doing that before Withering to death, so that is emphatically not the reason).
Indies Dir en grey was highly influenced, stylistically, by indies era Kuroyume that preceded them, seen here:

But Dir en grey's more recent influences, last I checked, were more along the lines of Korn and other western "alternative metal", to which I'm terribly averse, even allergic.
Anyway, here's something better, though disbanded, that existed concurrently with early Dir en grey:
BCyOQx7GfFo
DISCLAIMER: NOT FASCISTS (Nazi armbands are for admittedly quite dated shock effect).
But I'm pretty sure my suggestions are off-topic so I'll leave it at that.

I was never big on Celeste. Their music just doesn't sound all that emotional. But that Mihai Edrisch song was amazing. I know I've heard of them before, but I guess I never actually listened to them.

And I agree with you on Liturgy. But I think the primary reason they get so much shit is because black metal fans see them as a symbol of the growing "hipster" influence in the black metal.

Marrow of a Bone was influenced by alternative metal, and their latest stuff is some-what metalcore influenced. But Uroboros was very prog-metalish and atmospheric.

Yeah, Celeste doesn't portray too much emotion, I just love blasting that wall of sound sometimes.
DEFINITELY get Mihai Edrisch. I don't know which album I like more, just get both of their albums! They're called "L'un sans l'autre" and "Un jour sans lendemain" (if you can't find them, PM me)
Now I feel like listening to them all day, haven't in years...

And I agree about Liturgy. Their frontman does seem pretty pretentious in interviews (but every front man for Black Metal usually says something dumb...). Musically, I think they're awesome.

I'll look deeper into my music collection and get back to ya :)

PS: Checked into Ekkaia (from your OP). Sooooo good!

Hellshock and Insect Warfare.

Who?

I've been listening to ColdWorld lately. It's pretty standard ambient black metal.

Well, I've heard everyone on that list but Gospel... but after hearing them on youtube I'm definitely going to look into more of their stuff.

Hellshock and Insect Warfare.

Didn't care for Hellshock, but Insect Warfare was fairly good.

I like this a lot. Reminds me of Paysage D'Hiver.

Gospel is probably the best on that list. "The Moon is a Dead World" is one of the best technical albums of the genre. It's all I listened to in 2009  The haunting keys, the guitarists work together, the groovy basslines, the unique drum patterns, and the vocalist knows exactly when to do vocals and not to... It's 99% perfect. Only minor complaint is: lyrics = wtf? His vocals are fantastic, but sounds like he just made the lyrics on the spot, lol.

o well this is ok I guess

Post-rock? Screamo? atmospheric black metal?
How about COMBINATIONS OF TWO OR MORE?

Man when I first heard the term "blackened shoegaze" I thought it was a /mu/ joke.
But shit, it's great stuff.

If anything, I consider it a saving grace to both genres that had run themselves into a wall. I enjoy new black metal and shoegaze, but you can only rehash old stuff so much...

o well this is ok I guess

Really, any genre that started in or before the 90's is only fresh when combined with something.

They might not be fresh ideas, but put together you can hardly tell.

A bit melodic perhaps for your tastes, they've moved quite a bit away from the heavy rhythms they used to use. But their earlier stuff I think had a bit of a flirtation with metal-ish sounds I guess. Still, they've put a lot more emphasis in their chords but I think the (rather political) lyrics are still pretty well written.
