What can I do to advance the cause of the working class in my free time? I want to feel like I'm making a difference, and I think it would be nice to meet like-minded people. Any suggestions for what a generally interested person can do to advance the interests of the working class?

Find an organization near you. There are thousands of organizations across the country that focus on a variety of issues. It doesn't even have to be specifically about "the workers." Everyone needs food, housing, medical care and education, yet these basic things are being taken from us. Many groups work to fight against any further theft of the means of living from the working class and to provide more of those means. Joining an organization that provides meals or helps people find housing is a great way to become more involved in your community and meet great people, both within the organization and within the groups that you are helping, as well. Further, it gives you a place to discuss more revolutionary politics with people interesting in helping others but that have not seen capitalism as the root of the problem.

Leave social justice campaigning to liberals and campaign for socialism.

I don't see why social justice activism can't also serve to raise class consciousness and political awareness.

That depends on your outlook:
Group joining has already been mentioned. I would, however, not underestimate the effect of just talking about the problems of Class as they are today, and how socialism can fix this. If you're more looking for solitary action, try playing on your abilities: if you can write, write to your local political newspaper/website; if you can type, see if you can make fliers for your group (if you're part of one); if you're for doing websites, make one for the area (if there isn't one already).
If you're more the type to consider short-term reforms as conducive to revolution, I'd look into other social issue groups (say anti-racism, if that's an issue where you are).
Lastly, in my opinion, volunteer work and charity are things that hinder capitalism. If we can give even a little time or money to a GOOD charity, those hindered by capitalism can be raised up, and perhaps very ideologically I believe that helps to break down the thrive-or-die motive of capitalism. Some would disagree, but that's just my opinion.
Hope it all works out!
o well this is ok I guess

There's really no end to ways to get involved.
In what capacity do you want to get involved? Joining a group like, say, the IWW differs in joining an insurrectionist commune, both in goals an method.

It can tend to reinforce illusions in the amelioration of capitalism e.g. making exploitation fairer etc.
