Does anyone have experience or know anything about substitute teaching in NYC (any borough)? Some questions..

Does New York City have many school districts or just one big one (I should know this)?

Are substitutes hired though an agency or individually by the school?

Is it competitive? Are there chances of being called in often? Do you need to be certified? Whats the pay like?

Classroom management-is it a nightmare or is it survivable?

BTW, For people in the UK, substitute teaching is what you guys call "supply teaching".

Sorry I'm not much of a help, but I can tell you that public schools in the 5 boroughs are all under the jurisdiction of the NYC Dept. of Education. As far as classroom management, it really depends on what school you're at I guess. Based off just hearsay it seems like it's highly competitive, but I don't really know. Sorry if that didn't help much.

I do not recommend this.
