The FBI is investigating "acts of sabotage" against Verizon network facilities launched in the days after workers went on strike, the firm said Thursday.
Cables have been cut and network equipment damaged in mutiple spots across the mid-Atlantic and northeast, affecting service to thousands of customers, Verizon said.
Among the places affected were a hospital and police department in New Jersey, drawing the attention of the FBI.
"These are vital parts of critical infrastructure," FBI spokesman Bryan Travers said. "We are not taking sides in the strike. Our concern is critical infrastructure and security, and that is why we're involved."
Verizon says there have been more than 90 acts of sabotage since Aug. 6 when some 45,000 landline workers walked out after contract negotiations failed.
Discussions between the two sides continued Thursday.
"[The union] does not condone illegal action of any kind, and instructs its members to conduct all strike activities in accordance with labor law," said Candice Johnson, spokeswoman for Communications Workers of America.
