View Full Version : Could I have autism?

I know someone who was autistic who used to go to school with me, and when I think about it me and him were very similar. I decided to investigate it and found that alot of the symptoms of autism I can relate to:

I am a very introverted person, very shy, very quiet, I have very few people I can call close friends, I get bullied very easily, I have an obsessive interest in a few particular things (apprantly a symptom of autism), I have a fair bit of difficulty vocally communicating with people.

I'd like a fairly accurate diagnosis by someone as to whether or not I could be autistic because I want to be 100% certain before I ask my parents to take me to the doctor, because I don't want to embaress myself.

Honestly I would not worry about it too much. You could be labled on the autisic spectrum with mild aspegers.

I have worked with youth who have had varying degrees of autism/asperges and friends with people on varies levels of the spectrum. They all have different capabilities and abilities. Getting a label wont reverse any of the symptons you have described. The only reason why you need to be tested is if you were falling behind and could not engage with school or work. Then you may need some assistance or special consideration/provisions to achieve your goals If you are quite capable I wouldn't worry this. If you have social difficulties then having some biological explanation can provide closure, you can have the answer to "why am like this?" but it wont neccassary improve your social relations. That is something you have to work with self reflection and working on social skills that you identify lacking in.

Unless you see it as a disability I would not worry about it.

ONLY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL CAN MAKE THAT ASSESSMENT

Please don't become another self-diagnosed "asperger" making us look like dipshits.

I'm not asking for a diagnosis here guys, I'm just asking if you think I could have it, because I don't want to embaress myself by telling my parents I have autism then finding out I don't.

So you would tell people you're autistic after some people on the Internet told you you might be? You don't see how that's a terrible idea?

GO ASK A DOCTOR/PROFESSIONAL!!!

I think I have The Clap because I read about some of the symptoms, but I'm not gonna ask a bunch of internet armchair revs, I'm going to go to the doctor. Hell, I might just have a bad rash.

You may be "different" and that's completely okay. There may be no need for a label or any sort of diagnosis or medication. A large number of brilliant mathematicians and scientists had personalities like yourself. If you're in school you may not feel glamorous, you may not be very popular with women, but its very likely you will go places that those who bully you can't even imagine.

Only if you feel there is a cognitive deficit, an attention deficit or you feel your problems may stem from an an inability to pick up on social cures, it may be useful to get some sort of help, a tutorial on social cues for example. There's no shame in this at all.

edit:Hiero said it best.

Can't you read?

I am asking if people on here think I am autistic based on what I have said, if the opinions of people on here say that I could very well have autism, I will then proceed to tell my parents that I think I could have autism and ask them to take me to a doctor so he/she can give a proper diagnosis.

The reason I want to get some secondary opinions to make me more confident about my suspicions before I go and tell my parents that I think I have autism is because I do not want to make a fool of myself by telling them I have autism then finding out 30 minutes later that I don't.

dude, everyone is agreeing me so much i can still smell their fucking rotten garlic breath when i get a boner, why are you even still trying? Stop being an arrogant prick. He was not asking for a diagnosis, what he was doing is asking a peer group for their opinion if he should go to a doctor. It is what normal people do. And why would he go to a doctor if he is not facing any major obstacles in his life?

Given that you're asking about it on the internet, statistically speaking you're almost certainly not.

If anything, you could have AS. Sure sounds like you got a lot of it nailed down, so to speak. I'd doubt any other kind of autism.

Has no-one read what *Comrade With The Cyrillic Name* actually wrote?

... I want to be 100% certain before I ask my parents to take me to the doctor, because I don't want to embaress myself.

So, 'go to the doctor' is right, but already included in the original question...

So, *Comrade With The Cyrillic Name*, I'm presuming that you can't go to the doctors' on your own? Don't know where you are or what your situation is but that would imply to me that you are in fact incredibly young. Like 13.

Sadly, everyone else is right - we can't help you. Some people refer to the 'autistic spectrum' and claim everyone has some behaviour that is part of it; this seems to me to be quite likely. If you have, welcome to the human race I'd say. Or, the 'autistic spectrum' may be pop-psychology rubbish, in which case you have some personalitry quirks. But then, so does everyone else. Again, welcome to the human race.

But I wouldn't obssess about it. If no-one ever picked up on it in school, or any interaction with the medical profession any other time, then any 'condition' you may have is not interfering in any significant way with your life; so it doesn't really matter, does it?

Or, 'Hiero's right'.

EDIT: Damn, this is in Chit Chat; Hiero, please consider yourself 'thanked' for your post on the first page.

Obs, calm the fuck down. I know it's annoying when people who claim to have an ASD make an arse of themselves on the internet, but that is not what Чёрные Глаза is doing here. Consider this a friendly, unofficial warning.

If you think you may be autistic Чёрные Глаза, then seek the advice of a professional. Since you tell us that means going through your parents, discuss it with them, not us; tell them "I think I may be autistic, but I want to be sure". If your parents are reasonable people (and it doesn't cost them much) then there's no reason why they shouldn't let you get checked out.

If your parents are unreasonable, then do you have access to a counsellor of any kind? They may be able to point you to the appropriate people, especially if you make mention of your parents' unhelpful attitude.

OP: I think the consensus here is pretty obvious. I mean, there are a lot of people here who may be capable of doling out situation specific advice until the cows come home, but none of us really "know" you and none of us are qualified to make an assessment one way or the other even if we did.

Hiero had it right the first time around. You need to ask yourself, is this a significant obstacle to my functioning on a social/school/work level? If your answer is either yes or maybe, it's time to talk to your parents and see if you can convince them to take you to a trained professional. If they're unwilling, Noxion's suggestion about talking to someone at your school (ie a guidance counselor or a trusted teacher) is a good one. School systems employ trained psychologists who can diagnose this sort of thing as well.

Anyway, I kind of hate the idea that somebody should feel "embarrassed" about talking to someone about this sort of thing. That's nonsense. I have a heart condition. Should I be embarrassed about that?
