My father has had cancer for the past 8 months or so, and has been doing chemotherapy. He is also self employed. (electrical contractor) he works by himself 99% of the time. Once in a great while he needs two people to do something, and usually just gets help for ten minutes from someone at the jobsite.
But anyway, he's been ill, and obviously couldn't work a heck of a lot. But he got a job that was supposed to keep him going money wise through the summer/fall. Working for this mega rich, business owner building a brand new 2+ million dollar home. The guy was to cheap to hire an architect to lay out the lights etc, so my father did that as well, not charging for it.
The guy completely screwed him out of pay. My father did most of the work, but some of it he had a friend do (under his instruction, usually on days he was too sick to actually do the work) he paid the guy $35 an hour, not that much less then my father charges for himself. My father put on the bill for the owner his labor at $35 an hour (me and my cousin for $15 an hour because we did much less "skilled" work, basically grunt work)
He refused to pay that much for the labor. Saying $35 was to much, he'd only do $20, and he'd only give me and my cousin $8. The thing is MY FATHER ALREADY PAID EVERYONE. And the guy RETROACTIVELY APPLIED THIS TO ALL THE OLD BILLS FROM THE OLD JOB. So my parents got a $4000 check. Thousands less then they were expecting (as they were expecting to be paid more for labor, up to the date the guy said he was being overcharged), and they have to pay for the material out of it as well! He is coming away with almost nothing! Maybe a thousand bucks, max. And that's the only job he's had in months.
Hope that a-hole enjoys his multi million dollar house. The extra $1600 was a huge strain on his budget I'm sure

The profit motive strikes again. Fucking the majority of us. Best of luck to your father and fighting cancer.

Was there any sort of written agreement for $35/hr? You can likely take him to small claims court.
I was doing some commercial photography work a while back, and the guy got pissy about the rate after he realized how much work was involved (written agreement). It came out to like $600. I gave him the bill and the photos on CD and he told me to get the fuck out of the office and that I'd have to sue him to get the money. So I did. And I won.

I'm suggesting to my parents they do that. They say they don't want to deal with it. They should, but I don't think they would.

You can't get much more anti-small-business and anti-self-employed than the south here in the US, and I had no problems. You're in New England. Way better odds of getting a judge on your side. It took about 2 months, but when I went in at 7am on the assigned date, I was done by 11AM. My check was in my mailbox two days later.
Just make sure that you have it in writing where both parties agreed to $35/hr. Verbal agreements are technically legally binding, but virtually impossible to enforce because there's no record (usually, unless you record it or have a witness). Although, and I'm not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt, I believe since he accepted the payment of the reduced rate it might affect his chances in court.

True, here is probably better then most places. My uncle is a lawyer, might try to pick his brain when he is over this weekend. See what he says.
Yea figures, try to pay your employees decently and you still get screwed somehow, someway right
I can't imagine what it's like working for the guy.

I'd burn this fucker's house down, kidnap his dog, and slash his BMW's tires. that bastard probably knew that your dad wouldn't sue because of the cancer. Fucking despicable.

If you had a contract or something where he agreed he would pay for $35/hr an e-mail anything. Take his ass to court. Then sue his ass for emotional abuse(?). Oh and the dog.

Doesn't have a dog, but yes he would need to be saved.
And yes, his BMW could use some work :D And his Acura, I think they have like 4 cars. Two cars a person, that's not wasteful or anything.
Instead of his dog we should rescue is son in-law. He's a cool Italian (like from Italy Italian) guy. Does amazing body work on cars, tried to start a business doing work on Ferraris, but it went under. Now he does odd jobs.
o well this is ok I guess

so I think we're all in favour of slashing the tires and sticking a leek up the tailpipe.

Shit, that's tragic. It's sad that someone could blatantly ROB your dad and probably feel proud of himself for being "savvy." Sadder still that your dad probably has too much work ethic to sue the maggot. Times like these I hope kharma is real.

He didn't get enough money to have a 2 million dollar house from being a good guy.
