2. Octoberfest starts off with a boot
3. Local shelter capitulates

5. Octoberfest parade and Hans House Squat

1. A few days before the Oct. 10th action demanding that the city open up the abandoned units of the Mayfair Hotel or the KWYC will open it up for them, the City of Kitchener decided to listen to reason and began renting out rooms. The Mayfair Hotel is a building that houses poor people, bought by the City with the purpose of redeveloping it into gentrified bullshit. After the City’s purchase, some tenants were evicted and some others simply moved out. When a room was vacant, the City refused to accept new tenants as their intentions were to empty the building and renovate it. Less then a year ago the KWYC took over the secound floor of this place demanding that the city open it up. On Oct. 10th, to celebrate the victory, the KWYC chose to show up with our banner and hand out pamphlets about the housing situation in KW, despite the fact that City council passed a resolution the night before banning protesting on City Hall property during Octoberfest (Oct. 10th is the kickoff of Oct. fest and the Mayfair is across the street from City Hall). Police presence was intense and vans were parked in such a way as to block the view of the demo for Octoberfestors. We still handed out over 500 flyers and got a vigorous response from the people attending. This victory is proof of the correctness of our tactics of intensification and we will fight until we have achieved final victory.

2. Octoberfest started off with a boot, police officers attacked a youth and arrested him for an alleged breach a month ago. After beating and arresting the youth in front of 100 Octoberfesters, the police refused to release him on a Promise to Appear, instead choosing to send him to jail until his bail hearing the next week. One condition for his release was to stay 100 meters away from The Spot even though his arrest had nothing to do with The Spot. Despite these continued attacks by the pigs on the people, we will not back down and the pigs that did this will be held accountable.

3. A local shelter owned by OASIS, a Christian drop in that also owns several youth detention centers, refused a woman (who was paying rent) entry into the building for being one minute late for shelter-imposed curfew. The woman contacted us right away and we went to the shelter banging on the door, and ringing the doorbell over and over again. A worker from the shelter eventually came out and said that she was late not by one minute but in fact by several minutes, and if we continued to cause a racket she would call the cops. We responded by intensifying the disruption and chanting “let her in!” After half an hour, the police came and refused to arrest the young lady (who by this point was breaching for being out after her police imposed curfew) and after more intensification the shelter capitulated. Yelling at Davin before we left, the head of the shelter stated that he runs various youth jails, and runs into youth whom because of The Spot “hate cops and think that Castro is a great guy”. He also accused us of encouraging drugs and prostitution by providing standard drop-in services to drug users and prostitutes, without coercing them to change their lifestyle. The KW Youth Collective once again won victory and we will fight the enemies of the people where ever they may hide, whether in police stations or behind the cloak of the church.

4. Irma Gonzalez, daughter of Cuban political Prisoner held in US jail Rene Gonzalez and Dr. Alieda Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, spoke to about 130 people in Kitchener about the five Cuban political prisoners held in US jails for defending their homeland. These Five political prisoners infiltrated US based terrorist groups that attack Cuban civilians for the purpose of undermining the Cuban revolution. The event began with a reception at The Spot in downtown Kitchener and was followed by a public meeting. Romeo from the Spot introduced the event and the KWYC pledged to continue the struggle for their release.

5. Members of the Youth Collective marched in the Octoberfest parade, unfurling the Spot banner and handing out leaflets announcing the opening of a squat on the corner of Charles and Eby. The house is owned by the House of Friendship and has been abandoned for about a year. House of Friendship, a local shelter that owns the property promised to turn this in affordable housing for quite some time. After one contingent was booted out of the Parade on four occasions (forcibly at times), a second contingent unfurled a banner reading, “Housing Now, If They Don’t Make It, We Will Take It, Housing Is a Right DEFEND IT”. This was greeted with cheers from the observers, particularly in the east end, the poorest neighbourhood in KW, our strongest base of support, and the community in which the squat was opened. After this, people went to the squat, where the head of the shelter personally came to discuss this issue with the youth. After being convinced that construction of low-income housing would begin in about two weeks, youth voluntarily left the Squat. The Squat was held for two nights. After the parade, many members of the community came to congratulate us, and gave us food, pop, and cigarettes that were desperately needed. Police, likely fearing the creation of a spectacle, did not confront the protesters but were closely monitoring the event.

We will continue to fight for the people
Victory Belongs To The People
Intensify the disruption
