The Venezuelan Communist Party (PCV) pledged at its 14th congress to support Hugo Chavez at the next presidential election while maintaining its position as an independent party.

The PCV said it was "100 per cent" behind the achievements of the Bolivarian revolution led by Mr Chavez and his United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) but it now believed it was time for the working class to take the lead and "push forward to socialism."

That would mean preparing to challenge the still powerful capitalist class and its presence and authority in state institutions, delegates said.

The PCV has long been an ally of Mr Chavez but the relationship has sometimes been turbulent.

When the party turned down an invitation to merge with the PSUV he initially denounced the decision.

But Mr Chavez sent a warm live telephone message to this year's congress and wrote to delegates declaring the Communist Party to be "essential" to the success of the revolution.

He was unable to attend in person because he is being treated for cancer.

Communist Party of Britain chairman Bill Greenshields, who attended the conference in Caracas, told the Morning Star: "The PCV is building workers' councils that operate in the growing state sector and in capitalist enterprises too.

"They organise around workers' conditions, their right to increasingly control workplaces as the revolution develops and - significantly - recognise the need for the working class to spearhead the fight for real socialism in Venezuela and the necessity for workers to control the state if socialism is to be secured."
