The Arab world moved to isolate Syria’s Bashar al-Assad on Monday as Kuwait and Bahrain followed Saudi Arabia’s lead and recalled their ambassadors while Cairo’s al-Azhar university, the top Sunni authority, called for an end to the “Arab and Islamic tragedy”.
In a rare outburst, Saudi King Abdullah demanded an end to the “killing machine”. The escalation in diplomatic pressure by Syria’s Arab neighbours followed months of silence in the face of relentless repression of a popular uprising.
