(Posted here because Chit-Chat has been disappointing me recently)

Kerbal Space Program (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/)

I recently came across this excellent little piece of freeware, currently in Alpha, that allows you to build and test rockets out of a selection of components. The default ones that come with the game are fairly limited, but it has an active modding community that has already produced a profusion of new parts (http://www.kerbalspacerepository.com/), greatly increasing the scope of potential designs.

Now let's meet our intrepid astronauts!

Meet Bill, Jeb, and Bob Kerman. They're Kerbals, natives of the rather small planet you'll be launching your rockets from. As astronauts go they're a fairly useless (if rather cute) bunch, forcing the player to take control, but it's amusing to see their faces whenever the rocket is doing anything other than standing still:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/kerbal_space_program_characters_fac.jpg

As you can see, the best and brightest of Kerbal aren't exactly natural astronauts. Except for Jeb. Jeb is happiest when the engines are roaring away and his colleagues are shitting themselves. I think he has the right attitude. If the crew is remotely representative of the population of Kerbal, then there may be hope for them yet, in spite of having less piloting ability than a turnip.

On the other hand, if rockets like this keep getting built, then I predict the extinction of the Kerbal species in under a century.

So what rockets have I been building? During an extended experimental period, my designs were thus:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot1.png

This is the Pluton MkI, the very first design I launched, made completely of non-custom parts. It did surprisingly well, and I was able to safely land Bill, Jeb and Bob... in the nearest sea.

Stability seemed to be an issue, so the addition of a few fins...

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot2.png

... resulted in the Pluton MkII. I also added a stage seperator in between the capsule and the last fuel tank in order to reduce the load on the descending parachute.

Having got the hang of the very basics of rocket design, and wanting to go further and higher, the Pluton Grande served as an initial prototype due to the design's successful history.

From then on I realised that the stock parts had some pretty sever limitations, and subequently I have designed some larger, better rockets, although I have yet to complete a whole orbit - it's very easy to either undershoot or overshoot, depending on how beefy your rocket is.

I really think there should be more games like this. What do you think?

This looks awesome

Too bad the game is build on some framework/engine called unity, that doesn't run on Linux (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=124.0) (yet, there is development on it (http://linuxgamingnews.org/2011/03/10/unity-gnulinux-exporter-in-development/)) and it is reported to behave badly in Wine (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=1288.0) (although bugs are worked on).

Are all of the planets included?

No. There's just Kerbal at the moment, but it's challenging enough trying to build a rocket that goes into orbit, and doesn't end back on the ground or flying into deep space. It's still in development so they hope to add planets later on.

This looks fun and interesting. Unfortunately this is probably the closest any of us will ever get to participating an actual space program.

damn. There goes my re enactment of the movie capricorn one. :D

Damn straight.

I achieved an elliptical orbit! Fuck yes.

Is it normal to see the words "structual failure" quite so often in the logs?

Yes. For some reason the larger the rocket, the more of them you get.

The funny thing is that I didn't see any bits falling off that weren't supposed to, and the performance of the rocket was unaffected as far as I could tell.

I keep wondering what on Earth the "unidentified object"s are.

This game is surprisingly addictive, here were my first attempts to shatter the surly bounds of earth.

Here we have the glorious Space Mafioso I, a simple yet effective test bed. It did however result in the deaths of three brave Kerbal cosmonauts, mostly due to pilot error. (I didn't exactly read the tutorial). Note how I had yet to figure out how to construct detachment devices to the booster rockets yet, showing the infancy of the design.

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee425/thesadmafioso/Kerbal%20Space/Untitled-7_edited-1.jpg

From this point we went on to constructed the magnificent Space Mafioso II, now with double the rockets and an actual way to detach the booster rockets. You would think this wonderful rocket would easily catapult my daring band of Kerbals into orbit, right?

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee425/thesadmafioso/Kerbal%20Space/Untitled-6.jpg

Well if you actually did then you would be terribly mistaken. Apparently there were some structural faults to be found here, and the booster rockets nearly tore the ship apart. A premature abort was needed to prevent certain death, much to the despair of Jeb, who I like to picture as the mission commander due to the sheer joy and pride he takes in his work.

So on to the Space Mafioso III.

http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee425/thesadmafioso/Kerbal%20Space/Untitled-5.jpg

Same basic design, except better in every way. More support structure things, more cool looking fins, more everything really. It was destined for greatness.

Until I realized that the placement of my stabilizers may of been just a bit off, after my rocket began careening out of control upon the point where I detached by booster rockets. Regardless of this minor error, the crew managed to make it back to the ground to fly another day.

By the way, I forgot to post a picture of the magnificent machine, without which such great scientific achievements are impossible:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot3-1.png

The Hephaestus MkI, as I have now christened it, is officially my first rocket to achieve a complete orbit and then some.

It is, however, a flawed design, as these action shots from a second run will testify:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot4.png

Even with 5(!) super-strength custom stabilisers, this thing starts veering right off the launch pad.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot5.png

The boosters come off, and with them most of the thrust:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot6.png

Yes, that's right. Even with the throttle at near-maximum (any more and the engine will overheat), it's barely enough to keep it going up.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot7.png

Welp. Trickiest gear change in 3... 2... 1...

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot8.png

BOOM! Look at that G-meter! Thrust city! we'll be in orbit in no time!

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot10.png

To the stars!

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/screenshot11.png

Oh, cock.

It was at this point that the camera broke, along with several important parts of the rocket. Thankfully the ejection system and parachute wasn't among them, and our intrepid rocketeers descended to safety. The engineers say the fault was due to mechanical stress induced during heavy maneuvering in the boost phase, but Bob swears it was space aliens. Mind you he was heavily medicated when he said that.

What stabilisers? Are you talking about the fins?

They help when in the atmosphere, but the best thing for stability is the SAS Module (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/~kerbalsp/wiki/index.php?title=S.A.S._Module). You can toggle it on and off during flight with the T key.

I just thought about downloading this and then saw the system requirements and remembered I was using an ancient piece of shit.

I can't seem to get it to work. It finishes downloading and then nothing happens. Any advice?

Did you unzip the files to a folder in your computers program files?
