Looking for punk music that...

...doesn't verge on being emo or screamo or any shit like that. My friend was trying to make me listen to some punk music (i'm mostly a rap kinda guy) and I felt like some of it could have been good except that the singers either screamed half of the time or sounded like he was about to break down and start crying. Bonus points if you can find bands with leftist lyrics that don't suck. Shame on you immortal technique.

I like bad religion and propagandhi so far. I sort of like the dead kennedys too. I've heard them before. I couldn't understand what some of the bands were saying though... and some of them they sounded too screechy for my liking.

That song was so overtly melodramatic, are they being serious? Since they're a supergroup I'm hoping the rest of their songs aren't like that. However, the way they handle copyright disputes is pretty funny.

I love Operation Ivy, the Clash, Dead Kennedys, Crucifucks, and MDC and I never understood when people try and confine punk to a narrow aestetic... as if Op Ivy's ska-influenced punk or the Clash's everything-influenced punk are somehow deviations from the genre. To me, Punk was always a combo of one or more of the following: rock, "art-rock", garage, reggae, ska, hip-hop, soul and rockabilly and country. My intro to punk came from Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Operation Ivy, so I've never been into hardcore "purity" I guess.

Anyway, people have already covered the classic, so I'll try some of the contemporary. I have old school taste in punk and right now is a good time if you like the aesthetics of early American hardcore or 1960s underground American garage-punk:

Did anybody mention Crass yet? Some of their shit might seem pretty dated but they're such an important band for punk culture, being one of the first to take anarchist ideas seriously (rather than throwing them in for shock or comedic value). Anyway, as far as tunes, "Do They Owe Us A Living" is probably my favorite political punk song generally. The chorus is just awesome.
