Hello :)
I've been lurking these forums for nearly 6 months and have gained an immense amount of information...for that I am extremely grateful. I though it was time to surface and participate in discourse.
As yet, I consider myself infantile in my understanding and explorations into the greater left wing. If I was forced to identify with one stream only at this point, I'd probably say Marxist. There are many elements of Anarachist thought that I tend to gravitate towards.
The irony of my life is that, superficially at least, one wouldn't expect (at least not based on propagated stereotypes) that I am a Communist. I lead a fairly comfortable middle-class life and own a self-proprietary business. Nevertheless, I am the son of a steelworker, have worked in factories myself, and have become increasingly disillusioned by the general unravelling of humanity. After pursuing a number of false rationales, I landed on the fundamental understanding that there are two groups of people in the word: the elite and the works (or oppressors and oppressed, etc etc). It was actually the video lecture series of Bob Avakian that I stumbled upon on YouTube that led me to this conclusion. From there I've gone on to read Marx, David Harvey, and Slavoj Zizek. And of course many excerpts of Lenin, Mao, Trotsky et al as parts of discussions on this forum.
I LOVE CUBA!!! I admire the work of Ernesto and Fidel, the intentions of the Cuban Communist Party, and the Cuban people. Sure, there are faults, but I think in general Cuba holds many valuable lessons for the world. I've been twice and spent my time in Havana and out in the tobacco plantations. I do love Cuban cigars and mojitos!
I've attended rallies in support of the Palestinians and against the Harper government - to date that's the extent of my activism. I've worked for the New Democrat Party in recent elections but as time goes on I'm increasingly leaning towards abandoning participating in mainstream politics all together. For those unfamiliar, in Canada we have 3 main parties (Conservative/hyper-Capitalism, Liberals/Capitalism, NDP/ Capitalism-lite)...ultimately though, they all subscribe to the same game. Fuck them all.
With respect to religion, I was raised in a very dogmatic strain of christianity, never could reconcile myself to it, and once I came into my own abandoned religion altogether. I used to spend time debating about different religions but now I realize that it's just another divisive tool meant to fracture society and obscure the true cause of humanity's misery.
Going forward I intend to continue learning, while getting involved in organizations in my are (southern ontario/gta).
I thank you in advance for all the time and resource so many of you contribute to this forum.
In solidarity, TDL
