The ever-infuriating Westboro Baptist Church, which made its reputation picketing the funerals of soldiers while holding signs saying "god hates fags" and "thank god for dead soldiers," says it is heading to Norway to lend its presence to the funerals of those killed in the July 22 massacre. The group posted a press release to its website (http://godhatesfags.com/fliers/20110731_Norway-Must-Repent-Or-Perish.pdf) announcing its plans to picket the funerals of those who lost their lives when Anders Breivik set off a bomb in Oslo that killed eight and then traveled to the island of Utoya to execute 69 at a youth camp. The Topeka-based church, run by former civil rights activist Fred Phelps, sees homosexuality as a deadly sin and has vocally interpreted slain soldiers as a message from god that the United States is "a sodomite nation of flag-worshiping idolaters (http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/archive/20060511_week-777.pdf)." The Norway venture seems to be in the same vein:Related: Chipping Away at the Self-Mythology of Anders Breivik (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2011/08/chipping-away-self-mythology-anders-breivik/40648/)
But unlike in the United States, where the Supreme Court has upheld the church's right (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/mar/02/church-has-right-to-picket-court-says/) to picket funerals and protest synagogues (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2009/09/27/2009-09-27_kansas_hate_group_gives_brooklyn_synagogues_fla k.html), Norway has laws banning hate speech

I hope they try it and get thrown in jail, or at least get the shit beat out of them.

Those people are an embaressment to freedom of speech.

I'm sure Norway will have some way of keeping those people out. The WBC can be regarded as a terrorist organization.

I bet they won't actually do it since they might be arrested. One of my parents believes it's all a scheme to make money since the Phelpses are all lawyers and will sue anyone who assaults them, and they just do the protests to provoke people into attacking them. I doubt it's true, but who knows?

Where does such a tiny cult get the money to travel around the US for funerals all the time and even go to Norway?

Wait, so what will be their warped justification for the Norway deaths? I thought most of their bile focused on "God's wrath" at the United States? What does America's "tolerance of the homosexual agenda" have to do with the killings in Norway? This would seem to confirm my suspicions that they are nothing more than attention and publicity-seeking wastes of cells who don't believe their own verbal diarrhea anymore than you or me.

(I realize that perhaps their justification lies in their manifesto in the provided link, but I refuse to give their site any traffic.)

It was posted elsewhere it's because homosexuality has been legal in Norway since the 70s and even gay marriage is legal now - so they say God sent the killer to punish them for it.

Couldn't the government just deny them a visa? I mean, you have to be actually allowed into a country - I can't imagine why any country would allow a Phelps clan member into it.

I seriously doubt Norway will allow them in especially since they said they plan to picket funerals of children. I'm frankly surprised none of them have been shot yet.

even if they try this is what probably will happen, like someone above mentioned the WBC makes an good living from sueing people who infringe on their 1st amendment rights but that games doesnt work like that in other countries.
the dutch government denied visa to the phelps, even went as far as declaring them persona-non-grata and i assume the noorwegians wont be outdone

I think those people are just god-tier trolls. I mean, even frigging Klan hates them.

They are probably not going to Norway. There was bit of a controversy when they threatened to come here, but it never materialised.

Didn't the UK just do the same thing? Or am I thinking of some other zealotry laden shit bird from the US? I swear I just saw an article about this somewhere...

US citizens do not need a visa for Norway but the government must have something else they can use. Are public expressions of fascism technically illegal in Norway? At the very least the WBC is instigating a climate of hatred and are guilty of incitement.

I do not want to see the WBC members beaten or killed, that is what they want to do to most of the people on this forum. I do want them to be excluded, marginalized, denied a platform, and held up to public ridicule.

I do not know all the details but most extremist religious sects in the US operate as tax dodges-they pay no taxes on their income, if its from the church. The IRS, if they wanted to could shut down the WBC. The IRS did shut down the fascist "cosmism" church of William Pierce (author of the Turner Diaries) in the 90s.

Would you stop calling everything fascist? This has absolutely nothing to do with fascism at all.

I understand the word "fascist" is thrown around too often and too loosely. In this case though it may be accurate.

William Pierce in the Turner Diaries certainly comes off as a classic National Socialist. I think he himself would agree with this. He was the publisher of a major white supremacist magazine.I am not sure if his magazine (which seems to have been on the "moderate" wing of the WN movement) could be classified as classical fascism but the milieu is certainly close to it.

Is Breivak a fascist? I know he regards himself, at least as a "cultural Christian" and supports laissez faire Tea Party libertarian capitalism. This is on the surface. I have a feeling, beneath this, Breivak is running off the same impulses which gave rise to Hitler. The same could be said of the Shitheadboro Baptist Church. This people probably don't read Evola,Ernst Junger or Francis Parker Yockey (if they've even heard of them)or listen to Screwdriver or fascist neo-folk and might even profess to be appalled by fascism as "anti-Christian" but at heart, they're fascist or very close to it.

I wasn't using the term "fascism" lightly to describe the mileu. The professed economic or religious ideology of these groups is irrelevant. They are leaching off the discontent and alienation in a time of capitalist decomposition.

Basically they don't. Even the far right in the US hates them (mainly for their anti-soldier, anti-US stuff though) On of the extreme televangelists (Pat Robertson?) even said of him "I think this guy's a little nuts." His "Church" consists of himself and his extended family.

That's who it was. I remember thinking at the time, "Man I wish he would leave... And never come back."

Yeah, I wish Savage, Phelps, Limbaugh and Beck could all be shipped off to Antarctica or something.

The whole church is nothing more than a great big attention seeking exerise. They probably all go hallelujah reading all the interweb posts slagging them off.
