Mr. Felipe de Jesus Calderon Hinojosa
We the undersigned, declare the following:
Over the past few days arrest warrants have been reactivated against Martin Esparza Flores, General Secretary of the Mexican Electrical Workers Union (SME), and Bobadilla Eduardo Zarza, Secretary of Labor of the SME. Meanwhile, members of this union are still in jail, and the authorities have threatened to evict from the Z骳alo [downtown main square--Tr. Note] in Mexico City the members of the SME who have staged a sit-in/encampment in the square.
We, the undersigned, believe that the SME workers are fully entitled to demonstrate and organize whatever actions they deem necessary to defend their legitimate interests. The sit-in/encampment is a legitimate exercise of the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution of Mexico.
For all these reasons, we strongly support the struggle that the SME workers have have been waging for more than 20 months to reclaim their public utility company, their jobs and their collective-bargaining agreement.
We therefore demand an immediate halt to the harassment and repression by the Mexican authorities against the SME union and its members -- all of whom, with their struggle, are defending the interests of the nation and of the working class as a whole.
Freedom for the political prisoners of the SME, repeal the arrest warrants against Bobadilla and Esparza, full freedom for these workers to express themselves in the Z骳alo of Mexico City, for immediate and positive solutions to their demands!
Sincerely,
[follows list of signatories]
