Pledge

"October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions.

I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza (http://october2011.org/freedomplaza) in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and
exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning."

What is this action?

This is a gathering of people who support peace and social, economic and environmental justice. Our intention is to stay in Washington, D.C. as a unified presence. We will use ongoing actions of nonviolent resistance to disrupt the forces that corrupt our political process and undermine our rights and human needs. We will demand changes that shift power away from concentrated corporate capital and free us to create solutions that lead to a just and sustainable future.

Where and when will the action take place?

The action will begin in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. (at 13th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue NW) on Thursday, October 6th in the morning.

What is the purpose of this action?

The purpose of this action is to join together to:

Create solidarity among the people and groups who support peace and economic, environmental, and social justice.
Demonstrate the power of nonviolence.
Model a society that functions with inclusivity, tolerance, and a process of decisions by consensus of the people.
Have a great enough effect that the government will take concrete steps to meet our demands.
Create a lasting force that will continue to move our society towards a peaceful, just and sustainable future.
How will the decisions be made during the action?

We will ask for groups that work on specific issues and individuals affected by those issues to come together, work as part of the October2011 Coalition and send representatives to a core group that can discuss decisions that need to be made. We will include people who are skilled in the consensus process and who understand effective strategies to advise the group.
How long will the action last?

The action will last until we achieve our goals of moving us onto a path to a peaceful, just and sustainable future. Part of the action will occur during the occupation in Washington, D.C. and part will have to continue on after the occupation to ensure that our demands are met.

PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY *** PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY *** PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY

On October 8th, please come to Chicago
To Demand an END to America’s Longest War!

~ A Call to Endorse a March on Obama 2012 Campaign Headquarters
On the 10th Anniversary of the U.S. Invasion of Afghanistan ~

October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the United States invasion of Afghanistan―America’s longest war―the “good war” that President Obama counter-posed to President Bush’s “bad war” in Iraq.

The overwhelming majority of Afghanis are sick of the death and destruction in their country and want the U.S. out now. The American war on Afghanistan is bankrupting the U.S., with soaring military budgets and record deficits since 911, and the hollowing out of jobs-producing industries and social services. Yet the callous response from many politicians to these problems has been to scapegoat working people – immigrants, teachers, and public sector workers in general.

This march -- and forthcoming actions against the G8 and NATO in Chicago next year -- are part of an effort to organize a genuine alternative to the broken promises and lies of politicians from both major parties.

With that in mind, we invite all concerned with these issues to endorse a march on Obama 2012 National Campaign Headquarters in Chicago on the 10th anniversary of America’s longest war beginning at 12 noon, Saturday, October 8 at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway demanding:

U.S./NATO Out of Afghanistan NOW!

We invite your community, student, religious, political or labor group to endorse and participate in this event.
