They used to ask this question when you flew to the USA. Do they still ask you if you are or have ever been a communist? Does being a communist prevent you from entering the USA these days?

Thanks!

Expect all those KGB spies to be caught out when they accidentally answer 'yes' :) (But also: not to my knowledge, no...)

These days they ask you if you are or have ever been a terrorist.

(Remember, the new boogeymen? Communists are so 80's)

I believe it can stop you from getting US citizenship still. Which I find humorous on several levels but alas that is American Bourgeois Paranoia for you.

No. I once went to the US for my brothers wedding, and had no problems at all. It was a nice visit as well, really enjoyed the place.

I have heard that moving to the US is problematic if you have serious communist connections. They're not interested in what you really believe or think, and they wont care that you post here at all, but whether you will be a genuine problem. If you were a known communist or trade union organiser, you pose something of a material threat to the US, then yea, maybe they would stop you getting a residency visa. I wouldn't worry about the citizenship issue either, not being a communist probably wouldn't help that. There is actual legislation making it illegal for migrants to get Citizenship if they are communists.

You still have to sign affidavits saying you aren't a Communist when getting any public sector job basically. Even at universities.

Are you serious? Is there any source for this?

Just people I know who work for my University. It could just be a State of Georgia thing.

I remember having to sign some kind of loyalty pledge before getting a job at my community college's admissions and records office. I'm not sure if it explicitly mentioned communism, though.

Edit: Ah, here we go:

California's oath for state employees states: "I, ____________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter."

Looks like the ideas of anarchism and communism are completely alien to the American ruling class.

I was a member of the ycl (young communist league) and cpusa. I just stopped being a member of the party because of them always backing the democratic party. I was angry then i still am angry it smeed like it wasnt changing much. i would go to protests and would to get into fights or shouting matches with pro-right wingers people i cant stand and should be seen as the enemy. i was told i was causing too much trouble and giving them a bad name. I still consider myself a comunist just not a memeber of the cpusa or ycl.

I believe there was a court case that actually distinguished between stalinists and trots in terms of what constituted a "communist party" for emigration purposes, but the gist of the outcome was that they were really interested in excluding soviet-supported (i.e., stalinist) parties rather than some trot sect only 10 people had heard about.

BTW this question is asked whenever permanent residency or citizenship is sought, but anything less than that they don't bother. There is also a section I believe where you can "explain" why you answered "yes". It is not an automatic disqualifier - how else would they get for example high profile defectors?

I wonder if they actually expect people to answer that truthfully

I am more curious if the FBI still keeps the list of Leftist Radicals they kept good tabs on. I mean they had lots of manpower dedicated to keeping track of people no matter how minor that were remotely involved with Far Left politics and Revolutionary Movements. I would assume they still do it. I guess the easiest way to check is to apply to the FBI for lulz and see how they respond.:D

They don't actually ask you that, it was just a play on words with how the old HUAC question, adjusted to today's mindset.
