Tel Aviv, Israel (CNN) -- About 50,000 people are marching Saturday night through the streets of Tel Aviv to rail against soaring housing prices in Israel, a police spokesman said.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld added that tens of thousands of others have taken to the streets in cities elsewhere in the Middle Eastern nation, voicing similar sentiments.
Hundreds of policemen have been deployed nationwide related to the demonstrations, but Rosenfeld said there have been no reports of problems or violence.
Demanding government action, many of the Tel Aviv marchers held signs that read, "welfare state now" and "social justice now."
Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he believed "a fundamental change is needed" and promised comprehensive reforms that would speed up bureaucracy and construction of more apartments.
