To be honest, I think that your returns are going to reflect the kind of people how frequent forums in general, rather than of the left in particular. Far as I can tell, the subject matter of a forum just tends to skew an average (usually clustered in the 16-24 range) one way or the other, rather than determining it independently.

From what I've read though, I do get the impression that most people throughout history have tended to come to Communism at quite an early age. According to the ICC's history, most of the leading militants of the Italian Left when they formed a Fraction in the late 20's were around the age of 25. And most of those had been members of the PCd'I since the Livorno congress in 1921. The few people who were in their 30's and 40's tended to be intellectuals by proffession rather than workers. Similarly, I spoke with one of the ICC's older members, and he recounted that at the formation of the ICC many of them were younger than 20 (I am stating this from memory so it could be wrong, but he did mention that they were incredibly young at the time). The main exception was Mark Chirik who had been a member of the Gauche Communiste de France in the 40's and 50's. I even remember people on here stating that the average age of the Bolshevik party in 1917 was around 17.

I think the main cause is because when they are young people are much more likely to explore and become interested in 'radical' ideas like Socialism, Communism and Anarchism, whereas as people get older there is a tendency to remain within the patterns of behaviour set when they were younger. In generaly, you are probably more likely to convince an 18 or 19 year old that their way of thinking is flawed than you are to convince a 60 year old who has been a lifelong member of the conservative party. Though by the same token you probably aren't going to convince someone whose been at the militant game for some years that capitalism is, in fact, pretty swell.

EDIT: Also I suppose sheer youthful arrogance. Part of my own ability to maintain communist political positions at least is down to being able to drown out criticisms from 'elders' and people in positions of authority as idle rubbish.

Fair points. At this point, I'm altogether too stunned by how young all these buggers were (I mean, even I didn't except quite this young! :bored:), so I don't think my brain's in the right place to make any intelligent contribution one way or the other!

The option you voted for will show up on the poll results in italicised text whereas all the other results will be in regular font, although tbh I don't think it matters that you voted the wrong way, it's an internet poll.

age 53.

It is productive to get one's thoughts down on paper and posted for discussion, because (A) helps get one's anger out (B) helps one develop
new ideas, as well as learn new things (we learn all of our lives; not just while we are in school!)

I do a lot of pro-socialist posts on Huffington Post too. I occasionally like to "invade" into far-right wing forums and prove them wrong (it's like shooting fish in a barrel!) This is under different monikers than I use here, of course.

I would like to thank all of the good comrades here for helping educate me on the topics of socialism and communism. Keep up the good work! :D
