So I usually don't listen to a whole lot out side of hardcore, punk, hip hop and doom metal but a friend of mine has recently gotten me into some Dub Step. I especially like the more melt your brain chaotic type stuff.

Any recommendations?

I'm at work, so I can't post any videos, but here's some stuff worth checking out.

If you want chaotic metal-type stuff, you'll probably love Borgore. He's a sexist asshole and a lot of his songs are pretty bad, but the ones that are good are really fucking good. Check out "Guided Relaxation Dub". He used to be the drummer for Shabira, an Israeli death metal band, and it shows through in his music. All his basslines are incredibly distorted and he uses triplets and double-bass-type drumming a lot.

Also, check out Skream, Benga, Figure, Nero, Zeds Dead, Kanji Kinetic, James Blake, Horsepower Productions, Sub Swara, Rusko. Four of the biggest names in dubstep right now are Doctor P, Flux Pavilion, Datsik, and Excision, none of whom I am huge fans of, but are definitely worth checking out just to round out your knowledge of the genre. I gotta be honest though, Flux can get pretty boring, but "Bass Cannon" still has the most badass drop in history, it's no wonder every fuckin DJ has thrown it in their set for the last few months. Skrillex is also pretty cool, though not exactly dubstep. He can get boring after a while, but he puts out some pretty great stuff and puts on a sick show.

Also, I would suggest checking out some drum and bass too. I'll post some dnb artists later.

this is in the wrong section... cuz dubstep isn't really music.

It's a well known fact that if there are no guitars, it isn't music.

The problem with the chaotic dubstep (or 'brostep') is that a lot of it sucks such as Borgore and Skrillex.

Rusko was one of the first dubstep artists to pioneer this sound and he says he "regrets it".

However, Excision, Datsik, and Downlink do the chaotic stuff greatly. I'm really into their music.

Since everyone else is going to give you hundreds of recommendations of that crazy-melt-your-speakers type of dubstep, I would also suggest the more classic pre-2006 dubstep where "dub" had actual meaning in the word "dubstep".

Music is any noise that produces a melody or sound. birds chirping can be music. It doesn't have to be traditional guitar, bass, drum and mic to be music buddy.

Dubstep is a lot better than some of the music I hear on mainstream radio.

I remember when I saw Excision and Datsik at Starscape in May their set consisted of basically just drop after drop. Like, every drop just segued into the next drop til it got to the point that they lost their intensity and energy. When I saw Skrillex and Borgore at Bisco, they both were really great at working a smooth up-and-down trajectory into their sets that made the drops seem that much better because they were contrasted with the chilled-out and more ambient sections. It's kind of like if a painting is all really dark, none of the dark colors seem all that bold because there is nothing light with which they contrast and gain their intensity from. That speaks more to their skills as DJs though than producers. But to each their own.

I guess that's a valid criticism but I'm not a fan of that loud-quiet formula used in music by Skrillex and such, I found it even more redundant than Excision and Datsik. I also just can't stand Skrillex and Borgore's music period, so it wouldn't matter how well their drops were executed as I find their overall music to be terrible. Excision is actually one of the few artists where I could actually listen to an 1 hr 30 min mix by them...

Then again, live music has a higher standard of delivering an experience than just recorded music.

I mean, I definitely agree with Rusko to a great extent. Whether it's really dirty and distorted "brostep" or chilled out and mellow dubstep, I don't want to hear the same thing over and over. I want dynamism in the music I listen to. That's why I love Black Flag so much. They were the pioneers of hardcore punk, yet when it began to turn into this really formulaic genre, they went and released My War which totally broke the narrow mold of what hardcore was expected to be. So, in short, homogeny of any kind sucks.

Anyway, here are some videos.

Here's some grimier and noisier type stuff:

NebkFORscUA

ObT3U5KNN2g
wWC_WZ7gd6g

And this song may get repetitive, but goddamn it has the most epic drop in history:
kKTBKR__kzY

Not really dubstep, but sick anyway:

Some more "dubby" dubstep:

Yes:

Songs like these are some of my favorites. They combine the minimalism of early dubstep with the distorted basslines of more contemporary stuff:
x0X7owSH2u4
BdXDT-5jci0
dsDRQubgz-4

Can't not throw in Nero, they're so fucking good:
bE47er6qnqg
62YFTdV8i_o
(not dubstep, but who cares)

Check out the "Dubstep Allstars" series for some sick early dubstep.

Lastly, I'm gonna throw in this song just because it's the first dubstep song I ever heard and is basically responsible for getting me into electronic music in general. I seriously couldn't believe the bassline when I first heard it. They're sick live too:

I believe it's good that dubstep has evolved in such a way but only fear that it's going to become worn out, but for now good music is coming out. It's cool to hear the major contrast of the older dubstep and newer stuff but still recognizing the defining features of what makes dubstep dubstep, that dark bassy sound.

Zeds Dead spun this at like 190 bpm when I saw them yesterday, was fuckin sick.

And thanks Rusty, I love you too ;) To be honest, I actually haven't heard too much gabber, I definitely want to check more out. And yeah, Suicide's where it's at.

Yeah, some "block" party at south street seaport. I just looked through every video of it on youtube but all of them cut short before they did sweet shop. I'm definitely gonna keep looking though cause I wanna hear that again.

If you check out a good gabber DJ live there will be tons of troughs and crests throughout the set. A good DJ's not gonna spin straight 200 bpm laser-cannon-sounds for their whole set. I'll try to find some good live mixes but I just got back from a rave that was pretty much straight happy hardcore and gabber and the better DJs definitely had a varied flow with a lot of buildups and climaxes.

Id rather use a pistol to shoot through my cheek (mouth closed) and bleed to death then listen to dubstep. Thats just my opinion, like what you wanna like, you just wont catch me listening to that crap.

All of it is extremely mainstream now as well (depends if that matters to you or not)

Well I know where he's coming from. I posted the song I posted on What and most of the people thought it was crap because it wasn't the same old shit I guess. People say the same thing about Goregrind, one of my favorite genres of grindcore.
