Breivik's Manifesto was more than just a mad man's tirade. It was a seriously sourced document with thousands of references to American right wing ideologues like anti-Muslim xenophobe Robert Spencer, Rich Lowry of National Review and countless others.

Pat Buchanan was quoted as saying that Breivik is right when he talks about an Islam vs. Christian west epic battle.

His anti-feminist views are stuff that can be heard by any right wing nut on the radio.

This is serious and the mainstream media is simply ignoring this.

It's amazing the extent to which the mainstream media has gone to condemn the man as little as possible. They even refuse to call him a terrorist! Hell, even the Mexican media only refers to him as a Nationalist.

I think the way the media has portrayed this scumbag speaks volumes about the current political climate in the West.

I agree with that. Its to taboo to condemn a pro-western anti-muslim Nationalist no matter how heinous his crimes apparently!

The media whitewash is inexcusable, but completely expected. I even saw an article today debating whether he was really a "Christian fundamentalist" or simply an "extreme nationalist." Never mind the too-numerous-to-count references to Christianity and "Christian identity" present in the manifesto. :rolleyes:

Swedish media actually - surprisingly - after some debate has begun to use the label terrorist and "terrorist attacks" on the events. There was even some reports elaborating on that using it the way current media convention suggests was wrong.

Suprisingly dutch media, most notably the free daily newspaper "de pers" and the big progressive "nrc" have started publishing damning articles and editorials about the language of wilders and the islamophobe bloggosphere. Non of them lay the guilt directly at wilders feet but the notion that he should seize the wartalk and the furthering of an seige mentality or else accept responsibility are very present.

O'Reilly makes sure to let his viewers know that not only was the guy not a christian and not part of a greater threat, but that the number one threat to the world is Islamic terror, which is apparently responsible for everything including Islamic North Korea's nuclear weaponry.

I wasn't aware that nationalism and anti-islamism were uniquely american ideas.

It's interesting to see O'Reilly say that the guy is not a true Christian, considering what he did in light of Jesus' supposed teachings. It reminds me of the everyday Muslim insisting that Bin Laden was not a true Muslim considering what he did in light of Muhammad's supposed revelation. I'd even say it exposes O'Reilly's Islamophobia, since he has no problem accepting Islamic extremists as Muslim but can't accept a Christian extremist as Christian.

When I watch the kind of right wing madness that comes out of mainstream america, I'm surprised this doesn't happen every day.

the kind of response that Obama has gotten shows the country slipping into the trap that europe fell into in the early 20th century lets hope the liberal and left in that country bring back some sanity.

From my own reading of his manifesto and the reports on it, it seems his ideology combines:

* ultranationalism
* Islamaphobia
* Christian identity
* right-wing populism
* cultural conservatism
* racial segregationism
* right-wing paramilitarism
* neo-fascism
* white supremacism
* Nordicism
* nativism
* xenophobia
* a fear of "Eurabia"
* anti-communism
* anti-multiculturalism
* Likudnik Zionism
* an appreciation for the EDL & U.S. Tea Party
* Christian crusader mythology
* a paranoia of "cultural Marxism"

... Basically a "greatest hits" of both the American & European right-wing

I am really disturbed that America's bizarre cultural and political conservative trends have jumped across the pond and found people that are responsive to it. I had hoped, obviously in vain, that such beliefs were too Amerocentric to find a home in most of the European Far Right.

I think that the American far right is large enough that it is in some ways like a dulled sword to Europe's sharp knife. Politicians with ideologies frighteningly close to fascism have taken office and massive amounts of people are far right extremists in the US, but overall they aren't overt fascists. Most tea party people don't actually know how fascist they are, and would be horrified at the thought if they were smart enough to see it. The European far right is obvious and unapologetic in it's fascism. The US American extreme right is far more dangerous overall, because of the broad political support. However, the individual European right wing extremist is more generally dangerous than the individual American right wing extremist.

Does anybody else notice that the tea party seems to be shrinking, but the remaining members being more fascist?
