The Large Hadron Collider, spanning 100m underground, is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles, in the hope of better understanding the universe.

Now Russian scientists plan to have a Hadron Collider as well.

While it will use 1000 times less energy that the European conterpart, the Superconductive Cryogenic Nuclotron is a series of pipes used to propel atomic particles at tremendous speed.

In seven years time this will be an integral part of Russia's Collider but the project has some controversial international partners, North Korea and Cuba among them. I'm glad that Russia is moving forward in the sciences and bringing along scientists from nations that normally wouldn't have the chance to participate. I wonder if Cuban and DPRK scientists will actually participate in joint experiments with Russian scientists or if it's just an every so often thing.

It's probably just a front for making more nukes and pissing on the American flag.

When Putin gets his hands on something that could theoretically create a black hole and destroy the world, I start watching Red Dawn and playing Fallout 3 for escapism.

North Korea and CubaIt must mean they're back! The Soviet Union!

Seriously, who the fuck cares if North Korean and Cuban scientists are tagging along with this newly developing LHC in Russia? This isn't politics. It's science! The more international scientists the better!

Also, I seriously hope Susurrus is kidding about the black hole comment, given at how scientifically illogical it is to think any black hole would come about from the LHC.

Particle accelerators aren't particularly useful for building nuclear weapons.

Although I do wonder why the DPRK is getting involved.

I hate to be a downer on the sciences, but does anyone know the cost of building and operating a Hadron collider? I'm actually curious. If it's an extremely high amount, I'd rather see the money better spent on social programs.

Too make some Bond villian esque super weapon most likely.

With which they will then, finally, destroy all that America holds dear. As they hate freedom, the mall, and fun.

it depends. accelerators are useful for studying nuclear properties if the energy levels are not too high. the LHC functions at particle physics level, it uses ultra relativistic speeds.

To boost their science cred, maybe. It's not been going good for that lately after they cut scientific collaboration with institutions in China or something to that effect.

How do we steal this and how can we make those hadrons collide with Wall Street? For science of course.

I thought russians have couple of these as inheritance from Soviet science projects.

I'm sorry what? :glare:
This thread is about a hadron collider.

I'd imagine they'd be quite old if they did have any.

Just goes to show that Cuba and North Korea arent backward nations full of idiots, as many westerners are led to believe
