Before we begin, does anyone else feel that we need a video games sub-forum?
Anyways, I chose four because I couldn't bring myself to forsake any of these, so sue me.
Half Life 2, for its visual storytelling. It's about damn time the mainstream games industry caught up to Valve seven years ago, no? I know they're a better allegory for Vichy France, but the concept of the Combine as collaborators with the alien invaders is especially poingnant to me as a South American.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, for its character-oriented storytelling. This is the game that really opened the idea of games as art for me, and in my opinion has yet to be matched. Dragon Age comes close, but I fear Mass Effect is popular enough to end tits kind.
Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri, for its mass-scale historical storytelling. Yes, Civ4, Starcraft 2 and the Total War series might be better in many ways, but none of their stories have had the same effect for me. Not even Starcraft managed to inmerse me in its world what with its many nooks and crannies, whereas Alpha Centauri kept me awake entire nights (transhumanism ftw).
Star Wars Battlefront. What can I say?love battlefield, love Star Wars. It's such a shame insomniac had to go bankrupt when it did. I really have no good reason other than pure nostalgic memories of fun times .
I'm also a big fan of Tim Schafer's work, but none of it seems truly Great to me. I've also probably played all of the Call of Duty series, but the same goes for them. If I had to pick favorites, though, I'd say Psychonauts and Modern Warfare.
Yeah, three classics and some junk food, that's how you know I'm a hipster:blushing:

It'd be impossible to narrow it down to just four...
The Final Fantasy series, the Metal Gear series, the Fallout series, the Elder Scrolls series, the Mass Effect games... so many hours of enthralling, immersive entertainment.
And if I have to wait much longer for Skyrim, i'm gonna bust a testicle...

No particular order. I've enjoy these games immensely over the past few years.
1. Company of Heroes. Released in 2006 and still looks much better than any other RTS to date. Has a plethora of modifications adding many new vehicles and weapons, including one that adds an additional Russian faction. Downsides to being able to play as Axis is that you do encounter some Nazi fetishists online.
2. GTAIV. A pure sensory overload of a game. Fantastic graphics (if you have a good enough PC), awesomely detailed, semi-realistic car handling and damage, expansive story and open sandbox city to explore. Mutliplayer is alright, but nothing worth shouting about.
3. Sim City 4. On it's own this is a pretty simple game. Build a city, tax people, provide services, balance the books. However, with modifications this game can provide years of fun... and SC4 has hundreds of thousands of them, including a Mars user made expansion.
4. Red Alert 2. Excellent B-Movie story, memorable characters, looking dated these days but still a very fun game to play.
5. Fallout New Vegas. Enjoyed this more the Fallout 3, no idea why, possibly because it was much more open and the downloadable content being released for it are proving to be pretty fun.

Has anyone played the BioShock series? Good or bad? Rent or buy? I've seen some early pictures from their newest installment, and the steampunk-esque angle has me interested. From what I've read, the first one is a satire on a Randian utopia, correct?
I'm not a fan of Fallout, though, so if the two games are very similar I might pass.

2. Dragon age 1 (The second wasn't bad just disappointing)
3. Morrowind (Oblivion is good but I just like this game more because I played it as a kid)
4. Guild Wars (I don't play anymore but when I did it killed all my leisure time.)

No it isn't like Fallout. Fallout is supposed to be a survival RPG. Bioshock is a more linear action/adventure shooter. It is a pretty fun game. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. At the very least rent it, you can probably beat it in a few days.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2
Oblivion
Persona 4
Not in any significant order, but these are very important games for me personally:
Deus Ex: FPSRPG with emergent gameplay elements, conspiracies, (all leftists love conspiracies, don't deny it) and amazing ambience. Third sequel is coming out this august.
Fallout series minus third one: Damn, I remember playing second game hours upon hours when I was in junior high. Third was amazing disappointment; crappy dialogue and writing, balance out of the window, watered down RPG-elements and buggy engine. New Vegas was made by people who actually made original two games, this improved writing, balance and significance of RPG-elements greatly. It's a good Fallout game. But engine still sucks.
Team Fortress 2 or any Valve game really: I've wasted way too many hours playing the best online FPS I've ever played, but as they say, time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time. L4D is also jolly good fun online with friends.
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War with all expansion: What can I say? Still excellent RTS.
Jagged Alliance 2: I've thought about doing a mod for this game. Theme would be PPW. :tt2:

1.Brothers in arms(all of them) ....beats that COD crap any day.
2.Halo 1 and 2 ...an FPS with a plot ?? ..must be good.
3.Death to spies..started playing this recently and really enjoying it.
4.Medieval Total War 2..nore complex and challenging than Empire.

Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars - SNES
Possibly the best RPG to ever be made. It had everything: amazing graphics, great gameplay, an interesting story (Bowser isn't the bad guy?!), familiar faces along with great new characters (Geno), and lots of hidden goodies. The only downfall you could complain about was the Leveling cap, but I think it'd be overkill if you went past 30 anyway. I love this game to death, and play it every couple of years. By now, it seems like I just zoom through it, but I enjoy every second of it. It truly shows the highest point of collaboration between Square and Nintendo.
Chrono Trigger - SNES
It blows my fucking mind. So many alternative endings. Very interesting storyline, a crazy and always intense battle can happen, with cool combinations. Quite a lot of strategy involved with little timing, it took me a while to get use to it in an RPG (I'm use to turn based, like FF2/4, FF3/6, Pokemon, etc.) but this game is what some may call The Shit. First time I popped it in, I was immediately hooked.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - N64
It's often considered the best game of all time. Do I really need to explain?
Resident Evil 4 - Gamecube
Add more action, take out some spookiness and the traumatizing camera angels (along with tankie controls), and you have the best Resident Evil ever produced. While it was a big departure from what fans knew in the series, it still was a big hit, because it was a Resident Evil game at heart. I still play this game often. Getting awesome scores on the Mercenaries will always bug me. However, this game is just fantastic. It's the best in the series, and one of the best games ever produced.
Honorable Mentions: Mega Man X, Super Castlevania IV, Mario Kart Wii, Goldeneye, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 3/6, Pokemon Crystal, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and so many more...
1 - World of Warcraft
2 - Minecraft
3 - League of Legends
4 - Rome: Total War

2. Saints Row 2 (beats GTA anyday)
3. Fallout 3
4. Dragon Age: Origins

I'm actually a fan of Rome and Medieval II Total War, but I haven't the computer to play Shogun II or even Empire. I actually played the first Deus Ex and am waiting for Human Revolution (Invisible War was kind of a letdown, anyone disagree?). Fallout 3 and Oblivion are probably the biggest dissapointments of my life (I know, shame on me).
As for honorable mentions: Batman Arkham Asylum (what can I say? big nerd) as well as Ultimate Spiderman for the original Xbox.
For the one who asked, Bioshock is more of a critique than a satire, and it's rather good. The next one (infinite) is more of a satire, and there's gonna be Reds!
I remember an old brawler called Kung Fu Chaos, and fondly. Anyone else remember it?
I only played The Fall of Max Payne, and became rather obsessed with it for a while :D.

No, you are right. Bethesda's FO3 and Oblivion were garbage. *high fives*
Invisible War was indeed a disappointment compared to original classic, but it wasn't bad game. It had some enjoyable episodes. I heard a rumour that rocket propelled lockpicks are coming back in Human Revolution. Why screw around with doors when you can blow them up?

-Mount & blade, for the best gameplay ever thought up (mounted combat)
-Gothic 2, for superb scenario, gameplay, voice acting

Baldurs Gate II - The single best RPG of its type ever made, surpassing even its origonal, and games such as Fallout 1.
System Shock 2 - The best FSP ever made, and the second best RPG.

Aaaaargh! Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me? Blonde model with inch thick makeup as Covergirl Shepard? I thought we were over these damn stereotypes. Shepard is a goddamn space marine, not a beauty pageant. Shep doesn't have fringes which might screw her eyesight in firefight. She doesn't wear tons of makeup because she is too busy sleeping with crewmembers, cleaning krogan blood off her armor and kicking reaper ass.

Just a couple minutes ago I finished playing Knights of the Old Republic for the first time ever, and it definately makes my list.
1. Oblivion - I've never enjoyed a game as much as I did Oblivion on the first play through, I've played through with mabye 3 or 4 characters
2. KOTOR - as I mentioned
3. HoI2 and the games that evolved from it (Darkest Hour being the latest) - it introduced me to Paradox games and remains my favourite
4. CoD4/MW2 - Cod4 was the first game I played online and I clocked many, many hours of fun
5. (I know it was supposed to be 4) CIV3 - People don't seem to think this was a particularily fine instalment in the series, but I must have played over a 100 hours (probs more) over several years .... so its my favourite. :p
Honourable mention to Portal for being the bestest short game EVAR.

1. Elder Scrolls (Oblivion and Morrowind are tied for me), due to their fantastic settings and open ended nature.
2. Mass Effect 2, due to the great writing and characters, and the import mechanic
3. Banjo Kazooie due to the virus that is nostalgia
4. Dragon Age, because it reminded me of Baldur's Gate and NWN and that, but it was its own world and it had its own cool unique things.

Bioshock 1 is awesome and probably like $20

I agree with you about System Shock 2, but I have to criticise you for not recommending mods as well. There are tons of mods which improve gameplay, graphics and overall experience of that game.
When I first played Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, I hated it. Headbobbing was annoying as hell, scrawniest bandits took entire mags to bring down and overall balance of items, weapons and food sucked. I got as far as Rostok and then ragequitted. I uninstalled and ranted about it in Internet.
Then, Oblivion Lost happened. I heard about it in some forums, fabled mod that took all the suck out of Stalker. Hah! Old wives tales and ravings of madmen. Or is it?
After some encouraging words from some friends, I reluctantly installed both Stalker and Oblivion Lost. Hoo boy, is this the same game? This game is actually one hell of a masterpiece! Bullets kill fast, AI is much better, game balance is good and headbobbing is gone! It got me hooked alright. Afterwards I felt bad trashing the game first.

I was interested of Sims at first, but then it just got lame as time went by.
Operation Genesis! My bro bought it and I checked it out. It turned out to be pretty damn enthralling experience. Just watching the dinos stomp around, poop and devour puny humans.
Do you prefer first DoW game (and expansions) or the second one? I like them both, but my current computer can't roll DoW 2 smoothly. They made one hell of a job with voice acting in both games, so many memorable characters; Warboss Gorgutz, Lord Eliphas the Inheritor, General Sturnn, Kommando Nob, Shas'O Kais with his faux-asian accent, Kaptin Bluddflag... So much ham, but that's part of the charm. Good voiceacting is way, way too underrated.
Moar good games:
- Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (I was knocked on my ass by the sheer grandness of opening video)
- Chrono Trigger, obviously
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time for SNES
- Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, these games make world a better place
- Lost World: Jurassic Park for PS1, pretty obscure and not well known game, but playing as fucking raptor and T-Rex made some great memories
- Crash Team Racing for PS1, this game made my goddamn thumbs sore. My bro misplaced my copy of the game, I was angry at first and then sad.
- Ducktales, woo-oh! For NES.
- Snake Rattle 'n' Roll for NES. I can't stop obsessing about this game. It's one hard, ball-breaking, nerve-wrecking, making-you-throw-controllering, hard ass motherfucker of a game, but I loved it. Just like Battletoads. Maybe that's why I'm into a little pinch and squeal. Heh.
- Darkwing Duck for NES
- Super Mario Bros. 2, this was like the first game in which I've played as girl. First it was gross, then it was kinda interesting.
- Stunt Race FX for SNES, there is funny story behind this. I bought this as second hand-game with my allowance. Past owner had used names like "ASS", "GAY" and "SEX" in hi-scores list. I wasn't too good with english back then, so I ignored those names. I loaned the game for my friends and they laughed at me for being a perv.
- Tiny Toons Adventures for NES. I still play this game now and then to remind myself that there are good licence games around.

Four are you fucking kidding me? Listing four per decade would be fucking hard.
Anyways, I loved and/or played the Shit out of all of the following.
Tetris
Star Fox 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Smash Bros (the first one)
Starcraft (the original)
Civ 3 (no civ has been quite as good imo)
Medieval Total War II
Rome Total War
Age of Mythology
Soul Caliber 2
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (only Medal of Honor game I played and only fps I ever really got into, though I did play the shit out of the Russian Campaign in Call of Duty: Finest Hour)
Fallout 3 (it had its problems, but the haters be damned)
Hitman: Blood Money
Red Dead Redemption
Dragon Age (I played through this game way more times than could possibly be warranted.)
Team Fortress 2
Oblivion (while I only got this game recently I don't see my self putting it down anytime soon, its fucking amazing)
And yes, Minecraft.... (I just fucking love building shit)
Edit: Shit son, I completely forgot about Goldeneye and Pokemon Blue, I fucking loved those games.

Fallout 3 (it had its problems, but the haters be damned)
If you acknowledge FO3's flaws in subpar writing, problems in gameplay balance and not being loyal to the source material, I warmly recommend Fallout: New Vegas. I personally grew disgusted with FO3 because I have raging hard on for original games, but I wholeheartedly embraced lights of New Vegas. New Vegas shares excellent exploring with FO3 as well as overall strong atmosphere.

I have New Vegas. I agree it is a better game, but I still didn't enjoy it as much as I did Fallout 3 when I played through it. I think I didn't enjoy it as much simply because it was, in many ways, just a better Fallout 3 and at the point I had grown tired of playing fallout 3 (I had done like 4 play throughs). I'll probably head back to it once i am done playing Oblivion.

Top 4 seems random. I'll just keep naming PC games and will probably forget some. I basically like strategy, RPGs and adventures. In no particular order:
Crusader Kings
Hearts of Iron 2
Age of Empires 1 & 2
1602 AD
Heroes of Might and Magic series
Jagged Alliance 2
Rise of Nations
Vampire - the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Sid Meier's Pirates!
The Last Express
The Longest Journey
Monkey Island series
Tropico
Morrowind
Football Manager series
Civilization IV
Fallout
Transport Tycoon
GTA series (all of them, but especially GTA 3, VC and SA)
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
KOTOR 1 & 2
I've played PC games for most of my life, but I also like ROMs of old console games and the like. Small list:
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV, V and VI
Samurai Shodown
Shadowrun
Advance Wars
Fire Emblem
Golden Sun
Pokemon
Etc., etc.

Hmm. Top 4 games? Lets see...
Every Sonic the Hedgehog game - Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega MegaDrive was the first video game I ever played. So it makes sense that the series holds a special place in my heart.
Sam & Max - I've known about this game for a while, but the fact it's a point and click adventure game was what put me off it. Then I recently watched the cartoon series and loved it. So I gave the games a try. Been addicted ever since!
Worms 2 - Damn my best friend for getting me addicted to these games. Theres just something so satisfying about creating your own worms in order for them to battle it out in weird and wacky ways. Also, I made communist worms. HA!
Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 - Best. Zombie Game. EVER!! In multiplayer mode, I love being on the infected team. It's funny whenever my best friend screams out "RAPE" every time I jump on her as a Jockey. LOL

NES and SNES were my favourite platforms before I became full on PC guy.
One thing most PC games lack is challenge. I usually kick the difficulty right up to the "brutal", "A Fucking Suicide", "Just don't play this", "Insanity" or so on. I have always liked hard ass games, even if I never played through some of them. SNES and especially NES had tons of balls to the wall challenging games.
Some favorites from "Nintendohard" era:
- Battletoads - I remember being stuck on third level for months, I squealed and died billion times and thought that it can't get any more difficult than that. Can it? Well, I was wrong. Oh how fucking wrong I was. Fourth level was like spit on my face and slap on my already sore ass. But I continued. Wasn't gonna let that game beat me. It took me five or six fucking years to beat it.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - That swimming level at the dam? Oh... gawd! Electric plants everywhere, time limits and clunky controls, damn! But still, this game was awesome. Four different turtles to play, yay!
- Snake Rattle 'n' Roll - This game is damn good and definitely a legend. But it's hard. Faux-3D makes jumping and navigating difficult as hell and enemies bounce and dash around like that angry sun in SMB3, only million times faster.
- Die Hard - Holy shit, bullets filling the screen, too few medkits, too few ammo and squishy John McClane. Why, WHY?!
- Silver Surfer - I don't usually like shmups, but theme of this one got me interested. Imagine this; You are cycling down the street and ten thousand miniguns are shooting at you nonstop, idiots throwing cinderblocks at you and hordes of birds taking crap on you. Also, you cannot touch anything. Not even ground. Because if you do, you die like pathetic piece of shit you are. And no continues. You scumbucket. Now get those passwords because you have to type them again. Oh, did you bump that table? Well cool, because you are dead now. You piece of mutant maggot crap.
- Batman - This was one HELL of a game, but difficult as fuck. It punished with electric shocks to the balls if you didn't pick up all power ups, it gave you 20 lashes if you made tiny mistake in jumps and gave you massive titty twisters if you didn't learn projectile patterns perfectly. Joker as end boss was also hard as hell.
- Megaman II - Megaman II was like a nice breeze after these others, but it still had it's hard moments.
- The Simpsons - Oh lord why?! What have I done to displease you? Bart vs. Space Mutants was typical NES platformer. Only thing special in it was completely and utterly mutilated controls. Bosses were quite easy, but levels themselves were like being murdered by bullwhip brigade.
- Ninja Gaiden - Ninja Gaiden on NES. This one totally takes the cake. This game made me fucking cry, it also makes all these other games look like Super Mario World! Projectiles flying everywhere, completely random movement patterns, weak-ass hero, tough enemies and gameplay was fast as light. But I liked it, as hard and cruel it was for me. Good controls, graphics were great and ninjas are always a plus.
I've become to a conclusion. Nintendo Entertainment System was BDSM for little kids.

allright why not, but i cant promise that i keep it at 4.
as of right now:
mass effect series
saints row 2 (the third will probally steal that spot)
Total Extreme Wrestling 2010 (text based wrestling simulator, pretty awsome)
darkest hour (as of right now its more fun then hoi 2)
amnesia (probally the scariest game made so far)
back in the days though, these games were my absolout faves and i remember them with a lot of nostalgic feelings:
morrowind & oblivion
vampires: the masquarade - bloodlines
knights of the old republic 1&2
civilization 3 (with the addons best in the series, imo)
galactic civilizations 2 (again with the addons a superb round based stragety game in space...).
the game boy/advanced pokemon games, a bit to cute but great rpgs and a lot of fun.
secret of mana, terranigma, super castlevania 4, super metroid, yeah the good old days of gaming.
so i've got "cthulhu saves the world" yesterday, and im eager to try it out. old school rpg with cthulhu as "hero" sounds pretty awsome, so mabye a future favourite game.
+1 for Crash team racing. Don't have my PS1 anymore but I got it online for my PS3.

Sure, but they aren't actually atributes of the game. They are independent, unofficial community efforts to enhance or alter the game in a direction distant from that which the game designers had in mind.

1.The Sims, by which I mean either the series in general or the second game specifically. I started playing the original shortly after its release and have spent many a happy hour building homes and restaurants or telling stories. The second game is in my view the best.
2. Civilization III, which I started playing in 2003. I've never moved on to CIV, let alone CiV. I have my own custom mod, which incorporates some Marxist ideas. Factories produce unhappiness, for instance. I also added a government called Social Democracy which has the communal corruption of Communism (a perk) with the 'niceness' of democracy (no beating people, no state police, etc). There are also wonders like Universal Healthcare, Das Kapital, and The Encyclopédie to be built.
3. SimCity 3000 The SimCity series brought me into PC gaming to begin with, though I never read the rule book for SC2K. I did learn to play SimCity 3000, and I am still happy with it. The music is fantastic, and the use of advisors and petitioners make the game seem 'real'.
4. Mafia or GTA: Vice City. I can't pick between these two. Mafia is a stylish period story set in the 1930s with a believable, living 1930s city. I love the atmosphere and the city services (working trolleys, elevated cars, and drawbridges), but it does have the flaw of reusing the same textures for the city buildings. Even so, I'm still playing. Vice City has many merits, of course, and I still play it as well. I like San Andreas, but the eighties atmosphere of Vice keeps me coming back to it.
Honorable Mentions: Age of Empires II, Sierra/Impressions' city-building series (especially Pharaoh), Red Alert 2. Rollercoaster Tycoon, Star Trek Elite Force, Star Trek Armada..and there are probably some I'm forgetting.
