I started laughing when the iwner started mumbling the answer to her question, so nervous he was. He could have just said we have a Lenin statue because it's a Soviet Union themed venue. But he decided he wanted to make himself look like a dumbass on t.v. by stumbling around trying to find an answer.

This is awful. I'm critical of Lenin myself but I at least have respect for him. How is it the capitalists ruin everything?

I don't find it so much contradictory and "offensive" as I do tacky. Major douche chills. I think the owner is from soviet empire

In all seriousness I really don't care, in fact I'd probably go there just to say I've been. Probably steal something as a souvenir

I think several things are going on with this. At one level its meant as a shot in the arm for US capitalism in a time of severe crisis. After all gambling represents a principle of hope in capitalism, the working class's way of saying "there still could be something for me". The statue of Lenin functions to reinforce this, capitalism, in spite of everything, is victorious. Its like the racist cigar store Indian was in US culture, "our civilization has conquered".

At another level this represents the subliminal appeal of Soviet kitsch, Derrida's "ghost of Marx" that was discussed in another thread.(I have that book but I couldn't get too far into it) I don't have a job, I can't feed my kids, I'm buying into the illusion of American success by gambling away what little I have, surrounded by restaurants I can barely afford... Maybe, just maybe...old Vladimir Illich was right?

Also can anyone find that quote from Lenin where he talks about capitalism appropriating figures of revolution and resistance to make them seem docile and powerless?

I think it would be quite fitting

Am I the only one who found this amusing?

Actually, a coalition of Tankies should go there and then like, Soviet rage at all the bourgeois people hanging out at the casinos. Or sit there and rage at the restaurant people about any historical inaccuracies. Just to troll them.

"During the lifetime of great revolutionaries, the oppressing classes constantly hounded them, received their theories with the most savage malice, the most furious hatred and the most unscrupulous campaigns of lies and slander. After their death, attempts are made to convert them into harmless icons, to canonize them, so to say, and to hallow their names to a certain extent for the “consolation” of the oppressed classes and with the object of duping the latter, while at the same time robbing the revolutionary theory of its substance, blunting its revolutionary edge and vulgarizing it. " Lenin

I foresee a Che Cuban Restaurant and a Maoist buffet.

There are Mao Chinese restaurants, I remember Beck mentioning one in his "documentary". Anyways I was in San Francisco last week and I went to China Town and found a store with a "Chairman Mao" hat and "Chairman Mao" bag. Also many decks of cards that were Maoist themed, plates with Mao on it, stuff like that. Was going to buy something then I realized I'm not a Maoist lol.
