Is anyone gonna be going down there (its near Basildon) to show some solidarity and contribute to the resistance ? they've been given until the end of August to leave, even though they dont have anywhere to go. Its essentially ethnic cleansing, and I'm surprised that leftist organisations havent been campaigning to help the gypsies, whats up with that ??

Dale Farm traveller evictions 'could breach human rights'

Plans to evict people living illegally at England's largest travellers' site may breach human rights law, a United Nations expert has warned.
Basildon Council has given the 200 people living on 51 unauthorised pitches at Dale Farm, Essex, until the end of August to leave.
The UN's Raquel Rolnik has now called on the UK government to find a peaceful solution to the matter.
The council has said planning law was breached.
The government said it would issue a statement later.
More than 400 travellers currently live at the former scrapyard, which is between Billericay and Basildon.
Basildon Council has said that about half of the 100 pitches do not have planning permission and said previously it had carefully considered the circumstances of the site.
Travellers began to set up pitches illegally on the land in 2001.
Ms Rolnik, the UN's special rapporteur on housing, said in a statement that evictions could "constitute a grave breach of human rights if not carried out with full respect for international standards".
'Human rights obligations' Ms Rolnik and Rita Izak, the UN's independent expert on minority issues, have now called on government ministers to provide "adequate alternative housing for 86 Irish traveller families faced with forced eviction from Dale Farm, Essex, before the end of August".
"We urge the UK authorities to halt the evictions process and to pursue negotiations with the residents until an acceptable agreement for relocation is reached in full conformity with international human rights obligations," said Ms Rolnik.
She said the number facing eviction could include as many as 110 children.
"It is now of utmost importance that the rights of the residents to fair compensation for their lost homes and property and the provision of adequate alternative housing are fully respected," she said.
The UN rights experts said they were sorry that ongoing negotiations with the Dale Farm residents to try to find alternative land for the evicted families were abandoned a year ago.
The experts said that "cast aside a valuable opportunity to reach a just and lawful solution to this longstanding dispute".
People living at the site have previously said they were "distressed" at the situation.
Policing the clearance of the site is expected to cost up to £9.5m.

The man behind their eviction is a heartless, selfish disgrace. He wants to make 500 people homeless because the value of his land will be increased from like £4.5 million to £5 million. Wow.

Yeah he's a complete prick from what I can tell, kind of person i wouldnt mind seeing floating down the canal one day... this just highlights how the state's role is to protect private property (including when its not directly violated) even at the cost of making life a misery for whole communities.

I'd imagine from distrust of a nomadic lifestyle that moves beyond state boundaries and loyalties as well as of a lifestyle alien to that of permanent dwellers.

Well whenever they have camped in my part of town they have left after a few weeks leaving human excrement on the site making it unsafe for anyone else to use.
Maybe if they didnt have such a "fuck you " attitude people wouldnt dislike them so much.

^ A typical example of the ugly, ignorant and racist sentiment that pervades the British Isles in relation to travellers and gypsies - it's the last socially acceptable prejudice
Incidentally the residents of Dale Farm are Irish Travellers, not Roma, but few racists ever make the distinction - the Nazis certainly didn't and the oppression meted out is the same
The struggle against the Dale Farm eviction isn't just a struggle against racism, however, it is a struggle against the state and against capital - it's an anti-capitalist struggle - and that's why it is so important to defend the site and its residents
I've spent the last week there, we've been working hard at reinforcing the defences but what we really need most is numbers - the best way of stopping them is to mobilise as many supporters as possible on the site as to make any eviction attempt completely untenable
There's a demonstration on the 10th, be there! And stay there, we expect the bailiffs around that time
This issue should be a huge concern for all those interested in human rights, anti-capitalism and basic human dignity

the attitude of the media towards them has been repulsive, I go Uni in Essex, I know some of my friends who are there have been to a protest to show solidarity and support for them, I also went to a Human Rights Society meeting at my University at which most people were supportive of Traveller rights (as was the topic of the meeting I went to). I hope they find a way to stop the eviction notice and are allowed to stay, if it is still an ongoing struggle when I return to University then I will make sure people are aware and suggest we do anything we can to show support :)

A key part of the hatred against these people is caused by the fact that they dared to build and settle on the 'green belt', the sacred circle around the city which both rural toffs and eco-warriors uphold as necessary to stop the spread of towns and keep large parts of Britain 'green' and free from 'urban sprawl'.
But all 'green belts' should be abolised and built on. Good luck to the Travellers.

way to coup a topic for your own pet hate...
must be why a lot of eco-warriors are heavily involved with the traveler community..
it got nothing to do with retaining green belts and everything with gentrification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentrification), the rough ends of the cities need to be pushed further and further outside until they cant be pushed any further, and when that point is reached they simply need to disappear.

UN urges against eviction of Dale Farm travellers

THE United Nations yesterday called for a halt to the *eviction of hundreds of people living illegally at Europe’s largest traveller site.
Families at Dale Farm in Crays Hill, Essex, cheered as the announcement was made.
However, Basildon Council responded to the intervention by saying the issue was a planning matter.

A statement issued by the United Nations expressed “deep regret” that the eviction was taking place before travellers had been given suitable accommodation.
It said: “We call on the Government to suspend the planned eviction, which would *disproportionately affect the lives of the gypsy and traveller families.
“We urge the authorities to find a peaceful and appropriate solution, including identifying culturally appropriate accommodation.”
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has stated previously that the evictions may breach UN resolutions.
It said: “Travellers and gypsies already face considerable discrimination and hostility, and the committee is deeply concernedthat this could be worsened by actions taken by authorities andby some media reporting ofthe issues.”
However, Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council, rejected theUN’s appeal. He said: “The action Basildon Council is taking is about upholding the law, which the travellers have broken.
“It has nothing to do with their lifestyle or background.
“We would treat any member of the local community who developed or built on green belt land without permission exactly the same.”
And angry local Len Gridley, 52, whose back garden borders the illegal site, called for the UN to “stop sticking its oar in”.
He said: “It has nothing to do with them. It’s a planning issue, pure and simple, and if this causes another delay, then they should have to pay for the costs of the eviction.”

also some local norfolk comrades went down there recently http://norfolknonaligned.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/dale-farm-visit/ .. he makes a good point, the same one i made before,, why arent the left doing much about this ?? imo its a disgrace that the socialist parties aren't bussing in 1000s of members and supporters to defend this community (its right near london ffs). honestly, so much has been happening in 2011 in this country, and the so-called 'left' has done nothing except wandering around with placards etc and patting themselves on the back. meanwhile libya is being destroyed by british bombs, with 1000s of dead civilians, and blacks put into concentration camps.. the working class youth has risen up out of despair and anxiety in every major english city.. an entire village/community is being demolished and made homeless right next to london in what can only be described as ethnic cleansing.. do you see why i think its a waste of time for communists to work within organisations like the swp or cwi or cpb,, they prove themselves more useless everyday; we need to start fresh with a mass-based organisation that will wage a proper campaign against imperialist, that will be there to take leadership when the people rise up, and that will be there to defend communities from ethnic cleansing

for the UK gypsy is sadly one of the more polite things you will hear...:(
I really wish I were joking, but seriously, people here use words like "gypo" and "pikey" all the time and it makes me feel really uncomfortable around them when they do, I agree most of these terms are racist and racism like most forms of bigotry makes me feel physically sick (this is actually true btw, once threw up after hearing someone talking about people with language I cannot repeat for fear of inducing further vomit)

they are all racist terms really, traveller is the only term used to describe them that really isn't tbh.
imho the UK has many, many issues around racism and bigotry still...indeed I would argue the UK is one of the most racist and xenophobic nations around, the mere fact people call it "Great Britain" is pretty significant, if you consider the context they use Great with and the nature of the British empire (not even really a nation as such if you follow such concepts)

That's alright, I usually don't understand myself.
The situation with the Roma is very similar to that of blacks in America, in my mind. In the US, blacks are statistically more likely to commit crime than whites.
This isn't why they are discriminated. Racism against the Afro-Americans doesn't exist because they steal, murder and do drugs. The situation is how it is because they have spent the last couple of centuries at the bottom of the social ladder, with segregation, grave social injustices, systematical discrimination and all that. Many have had nowhere else to go except criminality.
Same with the Roma. They haven't been socially accepted like normal human beings, they have been shunned and persecuted. Their only way to survive as often been crime.
I probably make little sense.
