Public Split in the International League of Peoples Struggles (ILPS)

I know that we have all being expecting a split in the UCPN(Maoist) however, surprisingly and seemingly out of nowhere there has been a public disclosure of a split inside the International League of Peoples Struggles (ILPS). In the last few days a series of public letters (see 1, 2 and 3 - the letters are organized by the date of their release) have been issued by G.N Saibaba, Vice-President of the Revolutionary Democratic Front of India, Deputy Chairperson of ILPS International Coordinating Committee (ICC) and Regional Coordinator for South Asia of ILPS, and 11 other leading comrades of the ILPS ICC including the Regional Coordinators for Europe and Latin America regarding developments inside, and now outside, that international organization. The letters make several accusations against Jose Maria Sison, Chairperson of the ILPS, including having engaged in authoritarian and bureaucratic practices within the leadership of that organization through the undemocratic removal of members from the elected ICG; the demobilization of other ICG members and the centralization of power in the figure of Sison through an interpretation pushed by Sison and his associates that suggests that Sison is alone the sole spokesperson of the ILPS, which resulte in the issuing of statements and declarations without consultation from the rest of the ICC; violations of the basic principles of the ILPS through Sisons invocation of the spirit of the Bandung conference; an unauthorized engagement with the Beirut conference; and finally the declaration of sectarian statements through his office as Chairperson of the ILPS.

Furthermore, I have attached the 2011 memorandum of the ILPS ICC to its members organizations regarding the above letter 1, and directs its members to an original statement (also reproduced below) that was issued in Nov. 2009, immediately after the vote occurred and Sisons keynote address and report to the 4th International Assembly of the ILPS in Manilla below (if you would like to see the video see: http://www.josemariasison.org/?p=8025). In the keynote address Sison brands those behind the letters as being pseudo-Maoist and Ultra-Leftist sectarians with weird ideas and argues that the organization is developing much better now that they have left the organization. Furthermore, he defends himself against the accusations by Saibaba and co. regarding the unauthorized representation at the Beirut Conference (which had been organized by Hezbollah under the auspices of the Iranian government, which included speeches by members of said government from the dais, whilst the ILPS was simultaneously making statements in favour of the anti-Iranian government protests) by stating that It [the League] has succeeded in frustrating the attempts of a few pseudo-Maoist sectarians to undermine the unity of the League and to isolate the League in some obscure anarchist or even Trotskyite ideological corner of denying the major role of anti-imperialist states and countries and their contradictions with imperialist powers. Sison blames the smaller than previous participation in the International Assembly on the failure of the Ultra-left sectarians to perform their tasks and the undermining of the tasks of the League. Indeed, Sison goes onto state that, We consider as major cause for the slow development of the multi-level structure of the League the sectarianism of ultra-Left elements who sought to impose a narrow pseudo-Maoist ideological position on the Leagues united front policy and line of peoples anti-imperialist solidarity.

I do not wish to take a stance on these issues for now as I do not think that I understand the full implications of this development within one of the most important anti-imperialist united front organizations in the world, nor do I know which story is accurate. And thus look forward to hearing from people who are much more familiar with the ILPS and its activities to tell me which side is more accurate and what the implications this split has on the international anti-imperialist front. Furthermore, I am interested in knowing more about what are the implications of this split on the more local bodies of the ILPS at an either national or city-level. In my next post I will discuss some of the latest developments in the possible reconstruction of the RIM that have been made public in Maoist Road magazine.
