1.) Missing by Costas Garvas
2.) Hidden Agenda by Ken Loach
3.) City of Hope by John Sayles, about local city politics
Anymore? Most of these films aren't even available on DVD I don't think. I had to go to a specialty video store to find two of the three.

Did anyone see the one about the Italian guy? He was like involved with the Pope, the Italian government and Neo-Fascists? I think he was called the Black Pope or something.
It was a decent movie, forgot what it was called though.

The Quiet American comes to mind, though it isn't overtly communist or anything it still takes a strong stance against covert US Imperialism in the period leading up full blown American involvement in Vietnam.

That's the Philip Noyce version of 2002, not the 1958 Cold War version.
One of the best political thrillers with a left perspective is Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970) with Gian Maria Volonte (who played Bartolomeo Vanzetti in Sacco e Vanzetti.)
Other Costa-Gavras political thrillers worth seeing are Missing, The Confession, Betrayed, Special Section and State of Siege.

Perhaps the greatest recent thriller is The Good Shepherd, starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie (and many other fine actors). Its plot centers around the origins and early years of the CIA.
