View Full Version : Is 30 even that old now?

As I get older, I tend to notice that more and more early thirty year olds do not seem that different from twenty year olds.

When I found out that the Situation and Paulie D from the Jersey Shore were 30 and 31, I was taken aback. I assumed they were no older than 25. I know they are extreme examples of immaturity but I really do not see, with the economic and social conditions young people face, that being older means you're really meeting the standard associated with that age.

Has there been a social change concerning age that hit around the end of the 20th century? People are living longer and I am wondering if maturity scooted up a decade or so, at least from a social standpoint.

Those losers are 30 and 31? Weird. I pictured 23, 24, 25...

Nah, a lot of people who look and seem really young are still in their 30s. I usually don't hear "old people complaints" until people reach their 40s, and even then, that's only half your life... I know a 65 year old who probably can pull off 50 (naturally-looking) and goes sky-diving and stuff. My dad is 56 and people tend to think he's 40. (I have his genes, I'm 21 but look 16...)

yer not old.

You're as old as you feel. Many old people will say that they still feel 21 in their head. The only difference that really comes with age is experience. The older you are the greater your chance of already having made mistakes and learning from them.

As revenge for this my posting this my cousin in Massachusetts sent me a fb friend request, looking trough her info it says she is in high school, my first reaction was "Wtf! No, I fucking remember your birth, you can't be a fucking high schooler." followed by "God I'm old. :("

As I side note, I would like to say seeing a 13 year old girl's fb is horrifying.

I think I joined some page about trading Justin Bieber for Kurt Cobain and a 12-y-o from London with five Bieber fan pages sent me a request.

Was it you, Pirate Utopian?

I do love da Biebz. But no.

Anyway, If you're over 25 you're irrelevant and should get out of the way.

I do notice that older people 40+ tend to treat those under 30 as teens.

the generation that never grows up

I feel like I'm vastly less mature and adult now, than I was at 18.

When I was 18 I had a car, two jobs, and went to school. Now I get really drunk everyday and don't eat things that I can't buy on the dollar menu or cook in under 15 minutes, my job is comprised of sitting at a counter and making fart jokes, and working on my sweet studded vest.

Same i wanted to learn and improve myself when i was 18 now i just want to stop thinking entirely until its the weekend then i just go binge drinking.

Me 3 at 16 I'd moved out had to earn money to live I was super serial and knew how to squeeze every penny but now I'm just a slacker and I splurge money like it's going out of fashion. I kind of feel like I missed out on being a teenager so maybe I regressed some what.

There's no reason that longer life expectancy should mean that people mature slower in their mental outlook. The cultural trend towards infantilisation has different causes, none of which is positive.

30 is old: you may not be that close to death, but you're sure not getting any prettier (disregarding possible effects of plastic surgery and/or drastic improvements in skin-care routine, etc.).:(

I'm exactly 30 years old. I guess I've always until now felt older than my age mentally. Now that has balanced out and I feel better, more harmonious. As for the surface, I look younger than my age, when I'm clean shaved I can pass for a 25 year old. Wearing a hat makes me look even younger (My hair is unfortunately getting rather thin).

As a matter of fact I was asked for ID when buying beer from the shop (the limit is 18) a few weeks ago, although the guy at the counter was very young and insecure himself so that doesn't really count. ;)

But still I look young for a smoker that has turned 30 and that feels good. In general my health is good even though I suffer from a stiff back due to years of monotonous work. In much, 30 has for me been an age at which I've came to know my body and it's limitations.

I definitely feel like I'm still in my prime, but I've also started to get to terms with the fact this body and this life won't last forever, that time is limited and should be used qualitatively.

I'm 25 and whilst aware that being such a age means that I'm pretty much a third of the way through an average Western male lifespan, 75 is still a long way away and I could conceivably still have up to another fourty years on top of the fifty years I have left to get there if I am lucky (whilst the world's oldest woman died at 122, the world's oldest men tend not to live much past 114).

Looks-wise, I look a few years younger, maybe about 20, 21 (I don't smoke and I'm clean-shaven). I certainly don't miss having to be a child/teenager, and I think I will be happiest in my thirties and fourties.

I personally do not think of myself as growing old - I know I am, and I know I will eventually be somewhat like my maternal grandfather is now (he's 79 next year and my last surviving grandparent) - and I have to admit to hoping that we can reverse aging in humans in my lifetime (of course, it would depend if I could even afford it). I do worry that, as I have not done much with my life so far, that I might end up dying without ever really doing something with my life. I'm a fairly good writer, and I would want to get at least a couple of books published.
